Need Guidance On Cast Bullet Order . . . .
« on: October 23, 2011, 07:14:40 PM »
I'm getting ready to place an order with Beartooth Bullet Company for the following cast bullets and I need to get some guidance as to which bullet diameters to order. Beartooth offers several different diameters of the same caliber.

I'm going to order bullets for:

.357 Magnum/.357 Maximum, 173 grain "Keith Style"
.44 Magnum/.445 Super Magnum, 250 grain "Keith Style"
.45 Long Colt, 265 grain "Keith Style"

.454 Casull - I'm not sure which weight to order for the Casull. It will be used mostly for Whitetail deer hunting. I'd like to use these same bullets in my .45 Long Colt, if possible.

Thanks !

Fred

Nope different diameters. Ya really don't wanna be sending bullets at .458" to .460" down the barrel of your Casull and proper diameter for it will wobble loosely down the .45-70 barrel.

I'd use either the same bullet as for the .45 Colt or get a 300 grain. Either way you don't need to push it to the max for whitetails.

You're right Bill !  Thats what I get for staying up too late. I meant I'd like to use the same bullet in my Casull as I am in my .45 Long Colt.

I'll fix it.

Thanks !

I have been getting the best cast bullet performance of my reloading life (30+yrs) by using the largest dia. cast bullet that fits into a fully fire-formed case mouth from each gun. Im not alone in this, check out The Cast Bullet Assoc., etc. You have to not use one too big or it expands the brass to the point it wont chamber up clean or, if forced in, want to extract.
If you are FL resizing you may need to get a lead bullet expander button to fit your bullet, but you will get better accuracy and no leading. Undersize lead bullets (ie, the same size as jacketed, usually) WILL lead the barrel.

I placed an order with Beartooth recently and they will ask or will recommend a specific dia. depending on your slugging the barrel or type of firearm used.

In my case I ordered for the 45-70 used in a Handi and they recommended .460 bullets.
