30-30 LEVERevolution
« on: November 08, 2011, 11:46:15 PM »
Anyone have experience with the Hornady LEVERevolution ammo in 30-30 Winchester?  Either the 140 grain Monoflex or 160 grain FTX?

Hi Charlie.
I have been hanging around the forums for a few months, but this is my first post, so bare with me.
I have an MGM 14" 30-30 barrel for my Contender, and have tried a few different loads over 3 years.  In September I went to sight in my barrel for hunting season and took a box of 160gr leverevolution, which I had used before with pretty good results, a box of new 140 monoflex leverevolution, and some reloads I wanted to try (I am new to reloading).. The reloads were in both 125gr and 150gr BT's, and the results were so-so.  Guess my reloading skills need some work.  I then did a 4 shot group with the 160gr Hornady's, and I got a 1- 1/4" group @ 100yrds..  I then tried the new 140gr monoflex and got a 3/4" 4 shot group @ 100yrds!  Two shot were almost touching.  I do not think I could do any reloads that would do any better.  I hear the bullet performance on deer is also good, but I do not know from experience yet.  Hopefully I can say something on that matter in a few weeks.

1-1/4" is good, 3/4" is dang good!  I was thinking for off the shelf ammo the LEVERevolution would provide a little more accuracy at probably 75 yards and further than the flat nose rounds.  Reloaders can most likely do as good but I don't reload reload.
thanks,
Charlie

Picked up a Contender last week with a Super 14 .30-30 barrel on it. I mounted Weaver Classic 4x on it and took it to the range. I took a box of Leverevolution 160gr, 170gr Corelokts and 180gr Corelokts. It shot all the very well, but grouped best with the LE's in 160gr.  When I get a deer with it, I'll post the results.

My contender 14" barrel with muzzle break shoots 160 levers well 1" 100 yards also but have not shot deer with it yet.  In 30-30 rifle do real well drop in tracks.

i shoot lever revolution in 45/70  325gr,  accracy increased 10 fold at 100yds off , bench rest .  took a fat doe and a nice 8 pt  with it this year, both dropped on the spot. 50yds  offhand.  also shoot lever rev  in my 45/70 marlin rifle accracy also increased 10 fold. no need to shoot anything else.

I have just bought a 30-30 winchester ten inch barrel. Did I make a big recoil mistake?.Should I put a brake on it is it going to be a poor group shooter at one hundred yards.911 before I put out more time and money into the thing.

I have a 12 inch 30-30 and it is very manageable.  Mine groups well,  but you will have to try yours.  If you handload you can make it whatever you wish.

Good luck.

The first Contender I ever had was a 10" 30-30 Win. I don't remember the load that I was using but it was with IMR 4198 powder and Hornady 150 RNSP. It only had a 4X Leupold scope on it but at 100 yards I could keep 3 shots in a group that you could not see any bullet hole around a nickle. I took a bunch of money off some fellows that decided that their rifles could out shoot that Contender.  ;D Never did get to kill a deer with it because they were few and far between in my area back then.
