Adult deer found inside burmese python.
« on: October 31, 2011, 03:52:24 PM »
An adult deer was found intact inside a huge Burmese python Thursday, after the snake was captured and killed in the Everglades.

Contractors for the South Florida Water Management District encountered the python on a tree island in western Miami-Dade County, according to the district. It was killed with a shotgun blast.

The 15.7-foot snake had a massive bulge from a recently consumed 76-pound female deer, the largest intact prey ever found in a Burmese python in Florida, said Skip Snow, a biologist and python specialist at Everglades National Park, who conducted the necropsy.

Sounds like a base for a new reality TV program, "Swamp Snake Hunters". Using goats tied to trees for bait. I think I will be looking for other vacation spots. This reminds me of a story about an Everglades tour boat operator. This guy had a boat load of tourists and one of them noticed a snake hanging from a branch that the boat had just passed under. The tourist asks, "What happens if a snake drops in the boat?". The operator replied, "Some of the tourists jump overboard but then see the alligators crawling in the water from the shoreline. They then crawl back in the boat, no problem."

That's impressive. I wonder whether there's a stray cat and dog problem near there. Kinda doubt it.

Those were my stomping ground as a kid, and piranhas were just starting to show up in the canals back in the mid-70s.

That snake was a 15.7 footer, which is plenty big. I read an article about a 26 footer that was living under a house, and was captured by fish and game guys after somebody complained. Imagine that!

They are getting braver down here in South Florida. Still kinda hard to believe they all came from animals that escaped during hurrican andrew but I guess that is what SFWMD thinks.
