loads for 45/70 handi ?

just traded for some 45/70 cast they measure 457- 458 and weigh at 495 with gas check, what would you recommend for load, dont want a shoulder breaker just something in 100 yard range

Never gone that large personally.  These are from MDSmith's pages.. ;)

varget,H4895,H4198,H414, H110 will buy more if need since i was just blessed with some 400 gr speer FNSP jacketed bullets

Have you slugged your bore?  Mine measures .4590-.4595.

those of yours would be far too small for my Handi

If they are a little small, I've gotten improved performance from leads using a dose of tumble lube like Lee Liquid Alox.  It's messy and stinky, but increases diameter enough to get better performance and avoid leading.  ;)

slugged barrel, with egg sinker left a nice ring at the top, measures 4525

.452 = .45LC
 Bullet sizes vary from .450" for jacketed to .454" for some lead in diameter. Most are either .451" (jacketed) or .452" (lead) and Sierra even makes jacketed bullets for the Colt SAA that are .4515" splitting the difference.

.458 = .45-70
Bullet sizes vary from .458" for jacketed to .460" for some lead in diameter.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

That's normal for the lands, what's it measure in across the grooves, the widest dimension of the slug?
