32-20 on a SB1 frame
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:35:43 AM »
I have a SB1 frame that I am considering putting a 32-20 stub on.  The highest pressure I found in Hogdons data for the .32-20 was 16,000 cup while the .357 can run as high as 36,000 plus. cup  Therefore I think it is safe on the SB1 frame.  Please correct me if I'm in error somewhere.

Thanks,

Pete

There are a bunch of "em out there. The one here is a Trotter special  with a 303 barrel stub. Shoots fine and no issues. Go for it! G66

Pete,
My own 32/20 is a Trotter special and its mounted to a OLD SB1 case colored receiver and buff classic stocks.

I have found that 123g (7.62/39) bullets shoot GReAT! At hierarchy velocities. Now not mag loads by any means. But little to no "book" loads available for this bullets. I'm certain in below 20k in my loadings cases fall out of the chamber.

I will second the little Russian bullet, CW, as it worked great in a Martini Enfield AC carbine (Enfield conversion from 450-577 to .303) I had a while back. I made 1250 to more velo loads with it, and other than sight changes, it worked fine in that .303 barrel/twist.
FWIW, were I doing this stub, I would NOT use a barrel with the old, original twist for the 32-20 (too slow); been down those roads before.
But, since I can download a 30-30, or 308, etc. to 32-20 ballistics, and the little 32-20 brass is fragile, and is slightly bottle neck, thus not an easily reloaded with carbide dies cartridge, I would look at the 32 H&R Mag or .327 Ruger, if I just had to have a 32 again.
As it is, I went to the 25-20, played with it and have ended up now with the 25-35 (same bore, faster twist). I can shoot cast or jacketed, short or long, with a better ballistic bullet.

I know what your saying, but the newer 32 just lack the sexapeal of the grand old 32/20!!  I could have one in addition to but never inplace of my beloved 32/20!!

As for the 25/35... I agree I have one of those too!!  ;)

My Trotter Special 32-20 is on an SB1 frame too. I've loaded up some pretty stout loads using H110 and 100gr. bullets and haven't had any problems at all. The ejector flings 'em about 4 feet when I open the gun and the primers look good.

Hey Spanky,

Question, What is a Trotter Spec in 32-20? Never heard of that one.
I have a couple 32-20s, one in a Win. 92 and a Colt Police Pos. Special. Very neat round.
Thanks

SB-1 is fine for the 32-20.  If you just want to save some money, consider the 30-30 with Trail Boss powder loads.

Steve, Larry Trotter, a talented and knowledgeable denizen of this forum (trotterlg) has made up some "experimentals" and "specials" over the years. He takes a donor barrel, drills it out, and fits a .303 Lee Enfield barrel resulting in a .32 caliber, usually chambered for 32/20. He also has done at least a couple of 30 Carbine conversions.

In fact here's the 30 Carbine he did for me a couple of months ago:

You can see I've added a front target sight and a Williams receiver sight to it. I haven't managed to shoot it this way yet, but I did make some holes in paper with a 4x scope when I first got it before I switched to the irons. If/when it ever stops pouring rain here on the wet coast, I'll get out with it again.

Cheers
Kerry

CW, that's what I'm doing with mine.  I think the BC Carbine stock set is appropriate for that old timer.  Nice looking rifles.  Also, thank you for all your help and advice.

Ya know guys, my bride is one in a million.  I was talking to Patty about the 32-20 project over supper last evening, and I explained that it was not a stock caliber and told about stubbing and what that was.  She said "I didn't know what to get you for Father's Day, go for it."  Somehow, I have this sneaking suspicion It's gonna spend a lot of time hanging out with her guns.  She likes light recoiling handis and puts a lot of .38s through my Maxi.

Mornin' Pete,
I think you best make TWO!!!  :o Caus' the 32-20 is a plinkers dream and momma is gonna love it too!! Shoots as mild as a 22 with light loads and damn snappy with the HV loadings form the longer barrel.  ::)

I bought a big box of 115gr lead bullets many years ago when I discovered what so many knew about the 32-20. That was a Savage 23, then a Marlin lever and a contender barrel. Now the Handi. A splash of PB powder, thrown from a LEE powder scoop topped with a 115 gr bullet. It's great fun, shoots into one hole, dispatches small game with authority, yet very little meat loss.

I haven't shot mine in a while... I tried to get to the range to shoot my glock some more last week and never made it... Think I'll throw in a couple boxes of 32 shells in the bag, dust off that old Savage 23 and the Handi when I do get there next...

I sure did CW,  I got some from Grafs that were supposed, according to their catalog to be Speer 123 gr. .3lls and they came in .310  They're sending Sierra 125 gr. .311s when they get into inventory.  The Speers shot well considering the barrel slugged .310 on the lands, .312 grooves.  They grouped tight about 2 inches low and right from the 100 gr. XTPs.  Velocity is 1800+ fps.

It is a Trotter I'm sure, .303, five and five rifling and left hand twist.  I've got a minor problem in that the cases slide past the ejector and the ejector doesn't want to jump the rim when you close it.  I've got to make sure the rim is outside the ejector when I lock it up.  That'll be fixed this winter when it grows up to be an extractor with a better fitting part.  It's on a SB2 frame because it locked up perfectly on it.

Here's a pic of the finished lady.  She's  now wearing a Bushnell 4x32, not the scope shown.

Hey CW,  I forgot to tell ya.....that's a single shot SKS ;D ;D ;D   It's a lot better shooter than any SKS I ever owned and so is my 7.62x39 Handi.  Another thing I forgot to mention, Tim suggested I use the bullet seating plug from my 7.62x39 die for the pointed bullet.  I didn't have a set, but needed it so I ordered one.  Because of the longer case, the plug was too short.  I could have shimmed it easy enough, but for some reason, I checked the plug in the .32-20 Lee set.......Hmmmmm....that might work and it did.  It didn't distort the SP at all.  Because of the smaller diameter of the bullet, there wasn't very much pressure involved.
