45/70 Handi

Just purchased a Handi rifle in 45/70 ..the barrel is marked SB2 but the receiver is not marked  SB1 or SB2  ..and the receiver is blued almost black and shiney ..the fellow said he just bought it new....????? just a month or so ago...

Should be an sb2 take stock off if you are unsure and see if it is webbed

Thanks for the reply ....I'm unable to do that right now but will tray later this afternoon...I've never seen a finish like this on a H&R or a New England action before? it is black & shiney ..does't have the case color  look..

Handi Rifles aren't normally case colored.  It's likely blued.  Does it have the small dia. firing pin?

You might also check to see that the last 3 digits of the receiver s/n is engraved into the hinge area of the barrel.  This will ensure the barrel came from the factory with that receiver.

The case color receivers you have seen in the past are probably shotgun SB1s or the older pre 1986 receivers.  The exception to this would be the SB2 Buffalo Classic receivers that are case colored.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
