« on: October 13, 2011, 02:19:10 PM »
I know it's old as dirt and there are lots of rounds way more better, but does anybody besides me ever big game hunt with one any more?
I have a sportized no.4 and I love hunting with that thing.
maybe I watched to many old african safari movies as a kid

surehuntsalot:  I have a old sporterized No4 that still holds under one inch at 100 yds with reloads.  I have used this rifle quite a bit on hog and whitetail and finally set it aside when I realized I was ignoring almost all my other rifles.  The 303 British round is a solid performer.  You can purchase your choice of ammo or reload.  My preferences is either a 174 gn rn or 180 gn Spire point over VihtaVuori powder for the original loading.

I recently acquired a Martini Enfield .303  , and intend shooting cast bullets in the old girl once I get her tidied up a bit. Can anyone recommend    a pet load for a 150gn cast bullet . I think we are all suffering from the same disease G.U.N. Virus,  ;D I was diagnosed with the  Martini strain in 1985 .  I have it under control most of the time but I just had a relapse so I'd best be off to the range for some "therapy".  ;)
           Cheers Gaz.

GAZ:  My old Lymna Manual shows a charge of 11 gns of Unique under a 155 gn gas checked bullet for 1600'/sec as the accuracy load for that weight bullet.  For this, the bullet was the Lyman 311466.  HTH.

Sorry cannot help with 150 Grn stuff but I was using some commercially cast 201 grain Gas checked bullets in this one:-

This one, Muscat Martini of Belgian manufacture, will be sold over the coming winter due to the hassles we are going through.

As for hunting with the .303 well yes as I have a Parker-Hale Supreme No4 sporter and a couple of BSA's built on the P-14 actions one of which I had a Brand new BSA made barrel fitted to in 2009 and got it blacked earlier this year.

Edit;- Forgot to say i was using The Load in this one.

Hey thanks Mikey ,that should get me in the ballpark.
Nice piece of hardware Brito . My old Enfield  is a real "cinderella "by comparison ,but I have plans for her  ;) .  Was there a aperture sight specific to the large framed martinis ? I want to put a peep sight  on , but I need to do a bit of research first  as I would prefer to  keep close to as issued if possible .

There are quite a few peeps that were fitted to the Martinis. Parker-Hale, BSA and Greener at least made them. Problem is cost now as they are collectable in their own right. I have a BSA No8 here but it's missing a small screw. Keep meaning to make one up or get one made up bet it was never a must do so it never got done. This is a No8 fitted onto a BSA Model No2A .22 L/R:-

Yes that is a hair line crack in the stock. Rifle dates from between the wars (WW1 & WW2)

They came in three staff heights and that one is I believe the middle height one. There is also the Lyman type found on many Winchesters that fits the large framed Martini plus some rarer one that fit the the side of the action using longer Breech block pin and trigger guard screw.

Edit:- Forgot to mention that the .303 Muscat has not been altered that was the way is was made.

Well here are a couple:-

Parker-Hale Supreme No4

BSA Model E built on a P-14 action

Which now wears this new Redfield sight

This is the project BSA Model D rebuild:-

With new BSA manufactured barrel fitted. Sorry I didn't get any taken of it re-blacked. Due to the poor shape/condition of the original stock I put the barreled action into this olf Parker-Hale target stock:-

The project was/is still on going.
