.22-250 Loads using Surplus 844 & 846

I have 24 lbs each of 844 & 846 surplus powder that I use for .223 & .308.  I figured that since I have so much of it, I would like to see if there are any recipes out there for using it in .22-250 with 50 or 55gr bullets.  Has anybody tried this?  Can anybody suggest a good starting load for each?

I will be using this for plinking and hopefully pdogs in the spring.

Use WW748 data for 846 and H335 data for the 844.  Carefully work up loads as there is a fair amount of variation in some lots.  844 and 846 are not canister powders and must be treated as such.  846 has proven quite useful in my 22-250 but it is not my favorite.  That position has been held by H380 for the last 3 barrels on my 700.

+1 on the H380.  Mine loves the stuff.

I'll make sure I start low.  I've heard stories about guys using this powder & starting on the low end and still having high pressure signs.  I must have been fortunate because I haven't had that issue with either powder in my .223's or .308 (both are AR's).  It may be a different story when I open a new keg though.  Oh well, it just gives me another reason to shoot!

When you buy 844 and 846 from High tech or Jeff Bartlett, as examples, they most times have had access to the original load data for 5.56 and 7.62 for that particular lot no matter if it was pull down or new and can pass along that info.  I've found both of these sources to be reliable (so far) with that info but still load as though I didn't have that info.  After all if things go bad I'm not going to blame anyone but me.  When using such powders as these outside their original intended use it's pretty much a crapshoot but when done right it can work out.  The thing is although they may be usable in other rounds they seldom turn out to be primo.


BTW I'm a fan of the 40# kegs from High Tech.  ;)

Holy!!!  I didn't realize they had 40# kegs available.  Well, once I do some more load testing and finally figure out which powder my guns like the best, I may have to invest in one.  I would most likely never have to purchase powder again (for my AR's)!!!
