223 Remington VS 223 Remington Ackley Imp.
« on: December 23, 2003, 07:44:49 AM »
I have ordered a Savage 12BVSS chambered in 223 Remington.  I will be using this rifle primarily for punching paper at the range and an occasional coyote hunt.

I'm toying with the idea of having the chamber Ackley Improved.  Does anyone know what kind of performance jump I can expect by doing this?

Thanks!

I may have to replace the barrel on my 243 and was considering the AI for this. From what I understand you get to put a little more powder in the case. So for paper or varmints is this good?

there are a couple of reasons that i would do the ackley thing.

1.  less case triming.
2.  more powder = more speed = more fun
3.  really cool looking cases.
4.  something different than the next guy

if i get a new 223 its going straight to the smith to get punched out to 223AI

You get straighter case walls so the powder burns more evenly supposedly making it more accurate. I think on the 223 you get about a 6 or 7% increase in powder capacity. plus the fact that while your guns getting rechambered you can get the action trued, lugs lapped, and the action bedded. I love the Ackleys. Hope this helps
