20 Gauge slug accuracy question?
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:01:09 PM »
Using a plain 22 inch smooth modified barrel and standard shotgun bead what kind of accuracy could I expect at 50 yards using whatever slugs you would suggest?  Trying to find a real world expectation from a short light carry gun I want to put together soon.  Trying to get the barrel now but expect the price to drop after season is over.

I would say 6" +.. but thats dependant more on you than the gun...

I have a couple shorties and the best will do 2" at 50 and the worse about 6". These have peep sites...

My old timer 12 with just a bead front site is good for 6" at 50.

Six inches should do it.  I want a multi-task gun to hunt squirrels and such with during deer season.  I found out early on that a smooth bore will shoot slugs a lot better then a rifled barrel will shoot shot.  I worry about the smaller muzzle of the 20 on the same frame as the 12 might shoot high also.  But I quess there is always Kentucky elevation to go with Kentucky windage.

I had my 20 ga. Pardner barrel drilled and tapped. With a decent scope 1-4 variable I can shoot touching slugs all day at 50 yds, and not far off that spot at 75 yds. using plain Rem sluggers too.  Joe

Mine is going to stick with the plain bead shotgun sight since its primary job will be shooting shot.  Number 6s mostly.  Sorta like hunting squirrels with a coupla slugs in your pocket just in case.  If it's going to be deer hunting only I have a Handi in .30-30 and a bolt action 7-08.  It's just that I quit hunting deer only about halfway through the season and start back on the squirrels also.
