There is two 6.5x284 and the one that has won 1000yd match is the 6.5x284 Norma OAL 3.310" which will not fit a short action.  With the short action using some of the VLD bullets will be limited due to magazine length and you may loose case capacity.

If your looking maybe 600yds you should look at some of the other 6.5 caliber on a short action IMHO and alot depends if your looking at hunting/target type rifles.  Well good luck

I should mention a good 6.5x284 Norma works best with a long barrel mine had a 28" long barrel.

I had one built on a Remington 700 short action, w/24" bbl. I limited my load workup to 120/125gr Noslers at the time. I formed my brass from Win 284 brass ( which I found to be harder, longer lasting brass than Norma/Hornady 6.5/284 cases), did not need to neck turn, etc. I also limited my COL to 2.780", had no problems. For up to elk size critters, a 125 partition is just fine. I used the Nosler 120 ballistic tip with great results on deer size game. I can highly recommend one.

Hodgdon has datad for a 6.5x284 on a short action they get the OAL out to 2.910.   If you compare their data to the 260 you might want to consider that intead you use alittle less powder for appr same velocity.

Don't get me wrong I like the 284 case I've done the 6x284 and 6.5x284. I'm now shoot a standard 284 it's one of my deer/elk rifles and I think it's better than the 6.5x284 and here a good artilce on one short action
http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek095.html  the rifle in the article has alot of extra's you need to just look at the action/barrel and loading data.  Well good luck
