I doubt you are going to find an answer. The L frame has always been .357 magnum not .38 special and it has been made up into five shot .44 special as well.

In blue they have three digit model numbers like 586 and in stainless three digit model numbers like 686 in .357 and 396 in .44 special.

S&W is making some scandadium framed guns these days that are quite light and usually have fiber optic front sights with short (4" and under) barrels. My guess is one of those is what they had. Hard to believe it would be .38 tho and not .357 mag.

The clerk told me the model but I guess I had a senior moment and forgot. It was Alum. alloy frame and stainless bbl and cyl all colored to match stainless. It looked like a 642 on steroids. I would guess it was the alum alloy frame and not the scandadium  that made it have to be 38 spl. to not over stress the frame. Sights were standard not FO. I would guess it was a special run for a distribute.
I have a good friend that carries 2 of the 44's with the scandadium frame nice gun other than the cyl. gets tight and won't turn.

Sounds like a 242ti.  it should have an alloy frame and a titainium cylinder.  The price sounds a bit high to me.  I think they only made them for a year or two, but I have seen 2 of them for less than $600.  I hope this helps.
