Deer hunting near Summerville Missouri
« on: March 05, 2012, 06:03:26 PM »
I've ask this on another forum and got no reply so I'll try here. Can anyone tell me what the deer hunting is like near Summerville, Missouri. I have a friend living there who says I can hunt on his property, but I would like to know what to expect. He doesn't hunt and hasn't lived there that long so he isn't sure about quality of the deer there.

Not sure about Summerville but before my knees gave out I hunted near Van Buren which is about 50 miles east of there and the hunting was very good, lot of hills, hollers , and trees. rarely got a shot over 60 yards. love the area :D

Thanks Nova, it's right next to the Gist ranch WMA and looks like a good spot, but I've only been there one time for just a few hours. I check it out some more.

Generally excellent hunting around there, some areas are pretty open there is a lot of cattle ranching. There are also a lot of upland hardwood forests, mostly oak and hickory, and the terrain is rolling hills. A rancher recently caused a stir by shooting a mountain lion near there. The Gist Ranch has a nice shooting range also, I was down there a couple of weeks ago, Texas county is part of my territory and so I get down there every few months. In Houston (the county seat and biggest town) about 15 miles or so from there they have a big Pawn shop if you wanted to just go in and wander around, they have about everything gun wise in there, and reloading supplies etc. They are also the nearest Wal-mart for groceries etc.

My brother-in-law has land just down the road from Summersville in Eunice. I lived between there and Willow Springs for several years. The hunting is excellent and there's some realy big bucks to be had. Here's a prime example;
