Gunpowder Day
« on: November 05, 2011, 02:21:22 AM »
Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
And what should we do with him? Burn him!
Your ob't & etc,
Joseph Lovell

After the death of Elizabeth I the Catholics in England hoped that James I would ease up on them - quit killing them off in job lots.  Didn't happen.  Guy Fawkes, and some others, with help from the Netherlands, plotted to blow up Parliament, James I and the Prince of Wales.  Some of the conspirators had second thoughts because some of those likely to be killed were Catholic sympathizers, they contacted some people in authority.  Guy Fawkes was captured, along with 36 kegs of powder, in the basement of Parliament.  He was tortured, named names.  He was sentenced to the usual - hanged by the neck but not until dead, cut down, privy members cut off and burned in front of him, entrails ripped from his body  and burned in front of him. Then his heart. Head to be put on a pike, body quartered to be displayed around London.  He avoided that by jumping from the scaffold and breaking his neck.  His head was still removed and his body quartered.

I wish we celebrated Guy Fawkes Day in the U.S.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
