Why do I want a shotgun.?
« on: November 17, 2011, 05:36:08 PM »
I have two single shot 20ga smoothbores and a 20 ga tracker w/scope rail.  I never use them.  Mostly been a rifleman, so I guess I don't understand the shotgun mentality.  But they must be good for something.

Please enlighten me...  thanks.

I've never been much of a shotgun person either, but they have their place, great for turkeys here since rifles aren't legal for hunting them, and for hunting birds on the wing, pheasant and grouse, haven't hunted ducks since I was a kid, that's the last time I shot any, but at least it was with my 12ga Model 1908 H&R, took a nice tom turkey with my 20ga TDC last year.  ;D I don't begrudge anyone using them, specially considering many states don't allow rifle hunting for deer.  :-\

ive turned all of mine into rifles (or at least I am in the process of doing that)..

the .410 became a .44 mag..

the 12 GA is going to be a .45-70 soon (trapdoors only!)...

and the 20 GA is likely going to end up as a .357... (although it could end up wearing another .44 bbl if I find one of those first)..

If youre not using them.. turn them into something you will use and enjoy...

I have kept a 12GA bbl.. but have gotten rid of all the others (used them to fund buying/trading rifle barrels and other handi stuff).. I doubt Ill ever personally use it again as I have other shotguns I prefer.. but if I ever need a "loaner" to hand out.. its always there to stick onto one of my frames..

Well, if you want to hunt birds, you want a shotgun.  If you are strictly a mamal shooter then you may not need one.  Lots of guys hunt small game with shot, but others use a 22.  Whatever you want to do.  They have a distinct advantage when it comes to places to shoot.  Lots of clay and trap ranges out there because you don't need a backstop of the sort you need for high powered rifle.

I've never been a big shotgun guy myself.  I keep one to do a little sporting clay with friends once in a while and just because I can and I think it makes sense to have a gun for any shooting possability I may desire to use one for.  Not having one would seem like I didn't have all the bases covered.  What if I got rid of my last shottie?  As soon as I did I'd have some compelling reason to have to go buy another.  That's just me.

If I were you, with three and not seeing the need for any, I'd sell two.  Then you still have one just in case you decide "I want to break a few clays" and you have a few bucks to do whatever you want with.

They are a must for Upland game birds like Pheasant, woodcock, grouse (usually), turkeys and waterfowl.  They are nice for rabbits and sometimes squirrels in some habitats or at some times of year.  They are a plus in very thick brush with buckshot for deer.

I think my shot guns out number my rifles. I'm in a shot gun only county in New York for deer hunting. I also do a fare share of small game hunting. A 410ga, 28ga, 5-20ga's, 4-12ga's Never really saw a need for a 16ga but if I found a H&R 1908 in 16ga for the right price I'd probably buy it. Around my old farm house nothing is more fun than starling eradication in the spring time with the 28ga.

IMHO, the best use for a scattergun is to convince an intruder that he has broken into the wrong house.   Nothing conveys your message quite as strongly as a bunch of 000 buckshot at 1,300 FPS. :o

Sounds like you have forgotten why you first got them. I periodically sort out too, and those unused for a fair long time often find a new home. Minds change or notions dont work out, nothing wrong with keeping what you now use and like.

Next time you go out woods-walking take one of those smoothbore 20's with you.  You'll notice it balances so well in your hand that it's like you're not carrying anything. That's my best reason to keep one.

Living in a state that hates rifles, I love the scatter guns!
A slim 28ga made in the 70s is an alsome thing to carry and shoot.  Same with an older 16ga.

I don't know how many guns I own, if someone made me pick one and only one, it would be a 12 ga shotgun.  With the variety of ammo available, I can feed my family, protect my family, take down any game animal in the world ( 12 ga slug needed here).  As I said I have many specialized guns for this and that, the one that always seems to be around is my 12 ga NEF Pardner that a guy gave me.  For example, I went on a 30 minute deer hunt last year, with the Pardner and 5 shells I had in the car.  Came back with 2 deer, would have preferred to have my Remington 700 .270 along, but my buddy called me late, and I don't leave my rifle in the car, it worked out ok.
