ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A massive storm that battered Alaska's western coast with hurricane-strength winds and towering sea surges has passed the region in a much weaker state, leaving residents to assess the damage left behind.
Emergency responders are calling the storm an epic event that flooded the shoreline, ripped up roofs, tore off doors and knocked out power in scores of villages. They say the process of gauging the full damage will begin soon.
Forecasters say another storm is stepping in to replace the tempest, but the new storm is much weaker. It's expected to bring winds ranging from 20 to 40 mph.
The storm that pounded the Bering Sea coast this week carried gusts of nearly 90 mph and created tides as high as 10 feet above normal.

OTZ the winds in our area built through night of the 8th and by midnight we had sustained winds in the 60 mph range, by 6am we had gusts up to 73.8mph
roofing and shingles and loose siding & Raincaps on chimneys were stripped right off, health Worker smoke shack by hospital was tumbled 200 feet before coming to rest across 5th street and MHS parkning lot.
my Toyo stove had a time of it (up wind side), ended up letting it quit and heated house with electric oven during worst parts, 9am Nov 9th we lost electricty from a broken electric pole insulator that poped the feeder fuse for our block they replaced it in 30 minuets, a lazidasical aircraft owner left his plane loosely tied with no gust locks with old sun rotted poly rope, during worst part his tiedown ropes snapped (allot of others double ropes and parked vehicles sideways in front to block the winds). Here is the 1946 T-Craft that flipped onto Isac Lake (OTZ Airport)
