2012 handgun deer

got 2, 8-pointers opening morning of firearm season. Had 2 bucks and 1 doe come in my area about the same time and was able to take the 2 bucks with my pistol/scope combo. 

I have posted pics on forums several times before...but for some reason cant copy and paste my IMG link onto the thread?? Was gonna post some pics...

Ruger Super Redhawk, .44 with 7.5in barrel, topped with Leupold 2x m8 eer scope.

I shoot 180gr. JSP bullets. The pistol shoots them really well.

Very nice deer indeed.  I've never taken one like that.  What distance?  We're you in an elevated stand?  Where did you hit him and how far did he go? 
I think the .44M 185gr. JSP is a great load.  You can get lots of range out of that lighter bullet, terrific accuracy, and plenty of energy.

Yes, it was the best handgun hunt I have ever had, although lasting about 10 minutes..tops. I saw the big guy first, at woods edge out about 50 yds but not in the clear for a shot. He suddenly locks onto something coming his way, and it was another smaller 8pointer chasing a doe.
 
 the small 8point chases the doe into the woods near me and presents me a quartering-away shot at about 20yds. I couldnt pass him up, so I squeezed a round on him with a good hit. He runs to my left about 20yds or so and stands..and stands..and stands. After about (what seemed forever) a couple minutes he begins to stagger and then drops. All the while I am watching him and the doe that is still put.
 
 I thought the big boy had gone as I could not see him any longer....so I look back at the doe, and she sees me and takes off but does not snort. Just as she runs out of the woods I see the bigger rack swing around in the brush. I give the grunt call a few snorts and he turns and starts moving into the clear. About 50yds I took him with another quartering-away shot that hit higher than I like, but it broke his back and blew a lung out. He dropped and didnt get back up.
 
 all done in about 10 mintues.

Here's pretty much the skinny on it approximately:

Muzzle= 1610fps
50yds= 1360fps
100yds= 1175fps

energy muzzle= 1036ft/lbs
50yds= 745ft/lbs
100yds= 551ft/lbs

Most times I get all the way thru the deer. This year on the buck posted in this string, it when dead center thru the backbone at a downward angle breaking the back and a lung. I found the round just inside the pelt on the opposite side behind the shoulder. It went all the way thru but stopped under the skin on the opposite side. Damage was massive to the spine area.

I would expect good penetration at that speed too.  I hunted with 200 gr 44 mag XTP's a few years ago and went nearly end to end through a big doe. Brisket, heart and out the off-side ham.  That was moving at ~1800 fps from a 10" T/C though.


This morning I processed a doe my neighbor shot Tuesday.  She had been dragging a leg and by the tracks we both though it was a huge deer that had been shot in the leg.  1/2 right anyway.  Nice doe but her back left leg was about 3" shorter than the right one because of a bad break at the upper joint.  When cutting her up today, my buddy asked if I shot at her because he found a pistol slug.  I did not so I of course I was interested in figuring it out.


Best we could figure out was that she had been shot from below by someone with a 357 mag or a muzzleloader using that bullet.  It broke the leg and lodged against the spine by the kidneys.  I was shocked at how little the XTP had expanded.  Penetration would have been sufficient if placed correctly.  Still, after breaking a leg, I though for sure that it would have expanded more.
