6.5 100 gr Partition or 100 Barnes? new with pictures
« on: July 09, 2011, 02:15:54 PM »
I have an old Remington 660 in 6.5 mag that likes the lighter weight bullets and was wondering if anyone has any real world experience with either the 100 partition or the 100 gr TSX for deer?

Thanks,

Erick

Well while waiting for the lighter bullets I took a close look at the bedding and found a high spot. After getting the bedding the way I like it I decided to try some heavier bullets again. I loaded up some Nosler 125 gr partitions and some Barnes 130 gr FB  X bullets with 54gr of Ramshot Hunter and shot two 5 shot groups @ 100 yards holding at 6 o'clock on the outline of a playing card. The scope is a Nikon Monarch 1x4. I pulled the last shot low with the Nosler and the third shot low with the Barnes but other than that let me know what you guys think. They booth shoot good enough for my deer hunting with the edge going to the Nosler

I know this isn't the real world experience you were looking for but I'd use which ever my rifle fired the most accurate.  They're both fine bullets and would do well on deer.

If you rifle likes the lighter it might be the shorter bullets.
You just have to check being a copper bullet the 100gr barnes
might just as well be just as long as a 140 gr lead and copper bullet.

(A 165gr Hornady GMX is longer than a 200gr Sierra GK)

Good point on the length, I will take a look at the manual and see what the OAL is for the Barnes and the Partition.

I dont have enough game shooting experince with the tsx to say but i will say that a partition is never a mistake in any caliber for about any game animal.

I have a M673 Guide rifle in 6.5mm Rem Mag and like both the 125 gr PT and the 130 gr AB.
I recovered these 125 gr PT's in water jugs. They were recovered in the 5th jug.

No matter what caliber or weight, I prefer lead in my bullets.

I have shot Axis deer and Mouflon sheep with a Rem 260 Adams & Bennett Midway barrel/Hornady 129gr. I had the same rifle reamed out/converted to 6.5/284 (now we're getting somewhere!) Since this was in a short action Model 700, I used the Nosler 125 Partition to shoot doe antelope in Utah, and a blackbuck in Texas. I then went to the 120 Nosler Ballistic Tip, shot Fallow, Axis, Blackbuck, I liked it even better!
I traded the rifle off, but should have hung onto it. I really like the Barnes TSx, especially their new Tipped TSX. If heavy game (way bigger than deer) is on the menu, Barnes is your huckleberry. Otherwise, I would sugggest the Nosler Partition, you simply can't go wrong with it. Good luck to you!

erickrschaefer, when you get the bullets you are going to use, make up a dummy round and send it to Lee Precision (Lee dies) and have a factory crimp die made. The cost is $30 for the custom die + shipping to Lee Precision. I had a factory crimp die made for my 660 350 mag. With the factory crimp die you can crimp bullets without a cannelure.

after shooting 4 deer with tsx bullets this year id say definately go with the partition. the barnes bullets in 25 cal at least didnt do very well at all for me on deer. Bottom line is in your 6.5 mag for deer id look at a 120-140 ballistic tip or sierra. the 120 bt has done real well for me this year in the 264 mag. 5 deer shot 5 deer dead in there tracks. Quick kill and no excessive meat damage, exit wounds in all 5. What more could you ask for.

Love the old 600 and 660 been looking for one in 6.5 heard they are hard to load with heavier bullet weight, do you have alot of trouble. Seen quite a few 350mag over the years just don't see many of the 6.5's  just have to keep looking...

How strange  ???  I brought exactly one box of Partitions in 6mm, by accident I should add. Teach me to rush in and out of the gunshop  :-[ , and well I should have just piled the money up they cost with that of the powder and primer money and burnt it. Would have been easier.

Tried different powders, primer even and all I got was shotgun patterns. There is not way at any range past about 30 yards could they have been used on game. Will certainly never waste money like that again.

yup some guns just dont like them. Youll run into the same thing with barnes bullets, speer grandslams, and any of the bonded bullets or solid copper bullets. It stinks but if you want to uses a premium bullet you usually will have to spend some money and count on getting disapointed with a few of them.

I have never had a rifle that wouldn't shoot partitions well enough for hunting yet, and i know i've tried them in over a hundred different rifles.  Many shot this or nearly this good,

I checked the sights the other day on my 240 Wby. with 100NP's and they were touching, just like it always has done.

Of course, if you are trying to get them to shoot in some antique with a WORE OUT bbl... then ? you get what you get...  lol
