Any luck so far???
« on: October 29, 2011, 05:48:55 AM »
Anyone get a deer or black bear in the northern zone??  Or anyone get one with a bow??  My son (10) and I went out last Saturday and we're going out this afternoon.  Nothing yet.

Saw a very small doe while bow hunting, had to pass.  Nothing else.

Slim pickens so far, seen a few different doe and fawns and a couple spikes but nothing of any size. Maybe last winter took out more than we thought. In a way its starting to look like it did in the 70s. They need to lift the aw and allow people to feed deer in the winter in the remote areas, and back off with dmps for a while.

Due to a lack of much practice my upper limit is 20 or so yards.  At 30 yards and longer range I've been letting an occasional arrow go 3" from the aiming point and don't want to spend 2 days looking for a wounded deer due to being too careless.

I just got out for the first time yesterday AM.

I had two does (one of them quite large) and their youngsters pass about 35-37 yards away in a partially cleared right of way.  They curled around in front of me to another opening but never came any closer than 30 or so yards before slanting off.

30-40 minutes later a small to medium sized buck came nose down on their trail and came closer than they had but after I had drawn and was waiting for him to step the last couple of feet into a lane he ambled off after the does.

As he left he kept looking back down the trail he and the does had come in on so I hung out for two more hours hoping he had been looking back for a bigger buck.  No luck there....

In the afternoon I saw several more deer but none anywhere close enough to draw on.  There are a lot of them out there.

DANNY-L, where are you hunting-what WMU?

I'm hunting in the Southern Zone, WMU 7F.

6c 7 of us spent sat.and most of today mainly doing drives and a total of 6 deer seen,no horns spotted all of done on private farm land (hayfields of clover and timothy are still being cleared and the hay sold),no longer used for cattle. Very little sign. At night we have used spot lights a couple times and we do see a couple doe and fawns, been strange like this the past few years.

Danny, I think they all got tired of the long winters, sold their snowmobiles, and moved south...

I've said it for years that the deer get copies of the hunting regs,so they know when the dates are and go beneath the soil to hide out for awhile. Although they did cut back on dmp,s in 6c this year I would like to see them not issue any for a couple years. We get quite a few land owners who always get dmps because they own 50 acres or more that come to our area to fill them,I think landowners that get dmps (free of charge)should only be entitled to fill them on thier own land. dmap are also given out like halloween candy even though coon, bear and cattle are doing the damage they claim is being done by deer, and there are farmers around that knock down portions of the crops just to get tags to kill more deer.

Still not many shots being fired around here. Hunted all day and 1 shot heard. What gives?

Took a spikehorn in 6N. Thats all I've ever taken up there. I've seen bigger ones, but it's always at night when I'm driving somewhere.
