I've taken moose, goat, caribou and deer with it's ballistic twin, the .338-06.  Both will kill as well as the .30-06, with a better potential on larger game.  These cartridges are not magic, but they work very well on almost all NA animals.  Results are influenced most by bullet placement and bullet construction - not by the small caliber difference.

My Dad used my custom .35 Whelen to take a nice Moose a few years ago, one shot at 40 yards.  I used it to stop a Grizzly charge a few weeks later, did the job.  I've taken many Black Bears with mine, all one shot kills.  I am partial to the Nosler 250gr Partition bullet.  Dad used a Remington Core Locked (factory loads), I still had them in the gun when I shot the Grizzly.  All the Black Bears were shot with Noslers.

1 moose with a 250 grain Speer and several whitetails, I think all with the 200 gr. Hornady SP.  I was, actually still am, a great fan of the 270, but a trial hunt with the Whelen back in the late 80's made me think that Elmer Kieth was on to something with the big bullets.  They are simply effective in the field.  Oddly, the longest kill I have, approx. 300 yards, was with the Whelen on a whitetail buck. I had a Rem 700 from 1987 or 8 that liked about any bullet, but replaced it with a Rem 750 that is a little more picky.  I believe that bullet construction is less important with the 35 cal., as velocity is a bit more modest.  I would only use an AFrame or Partiton in the 270 on moose, but did not see it as important with the Whelen. so far, experience bears this out.  My criterion is confined to accuracy & proper velocity.  Good luck.

2 years or so ago I had a rem 700 rebarrelled to.35 whelen. 

I have used the 200gr Hornady SP, chronied at 2600 fps, to take 3 whitetails.

1 deer was hit in the spine, 1 in the shoulder blade, 1 hit a little too far back at the rear edge of the lungs.

The shoulder blade and spine hit deer dropped immediately.  The 3d deer ran about 20 yards, never left my sight, and left the most obvious blood trail I have ever seen.

I am a big fan of bullets over .30 caliber for hunting.  The great thing about the Whelen is that .35 caliber rifle bullets are designed to be pushed at the whelen's moderate velocities.  I have never had the opportunity to hunt naything bigger than deer, but my own imagination, and the testimonials here, lead me to believe that it would be adequate for anything I chose to hunt with it.

nosler makes a 225 gn over 2700 frs. i load barns triple shock 225 gn @ 2815 fps. one of the best elk and bear guns their is. does not kick near as bad as the magnums.

I like my whelen though I have only killed a coyote with it. Still the shot was 300 yards long and the yote was standing in flowers almost as tall as he was. The 250 grain Speer pushed to around 2400fps did the trick.

I have taken elk, nilgai, black bear, deer and hogs with my Whelen's. I have either used the 250 gr Partition or Speer and both work just fine. I have also used the 338-06 on the same critters and the 9.3x62 on a bunch of stuff in Africa. All do the job very well with minimal recoil and noise for what they deliver. I am currently working with the 225 gr TSX in my Ruger Whelen for a BC combo hunt next year.

1 Bear @ 28 yards with Speer 250 Grain Hot Cor @ 2450 fps., Dead Bear.

Hornady 250, round nose for under 100, spire point over 100, reloaded with Reloader 15, velocity is 2600 fps. Both loads are within an inch of each other at 100. I tried the Nosler ballistic tip 225 first, but did not like the penetration I was getting, sometimes it passes thru, sometimes it doesn't. I think all the 250's have given exit wounds

I have a couple hundred Pre Interlok Hornady 250 gr. RN's that I am going to use on deer and hogs. My load only runs 2400 fps but thats all I need.
