Making the Handi more so
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:04:38 AM »
I just sawed off the barrel of my .357 to 16 3/4 inches filed it true and crowned it with Wilson Chamfer tool -Amazing it still shoots very well ,now I will have rear of barrel dovetailed to take a 30 m-1 carbine rear sight ( you can flip up for close and longer range) and put a ramp on front . Hoping this will make good little companion for my daily walks also vehicle gun -
Cheers

I'm very pleased with my 16.4" .308 also! Cut it with an angle grinder and filed it true. Stills shoots better than I can. With the collapsable stock and butt pad, it is 28.5" long.

Be advised, the M1 carbine sight has a 'female' dovetail not the conventional 'male' dovetail of most commercial sights.  There is probably enought metal to mill a 'male' dovetail, just a bit more work compaed to a dovetail slot.

Bilmac- the skinner sights are very appealing and look to be virtually works of art and actually cheaper than a Williams 5D .They made me tremble for sure

In the first pic, it has a shortened Survivor stock (I think it had something like a 12- or 12.5"-LOP including the butt pad). In the second pic, it has the collapsing stock. I think it looked a little better with the Survivor stock, but I found it much more difficult to sling / unsling with the thumbhole stock, and I liked the adjustability with the collapsing stock.
Anyways, the second pic is with the collapsing stock and my old Taurus 24/7 OSS. Took the pic for a "zombie apocalypse" thread on facebook :P .

Airsporter- Thanks for heads up on different dovetail
Actually, my answer is incorrect.  ::) The early milled rear sights have a standard style dovetail.  The latter stamped sights had the 'reverse.'
