Is there a specific direction( right to left or left to right) that these sights need to be drifted out?

I recently drifted out the front blade on a BLR lever gun. I went out to the left, as shown in the parts schematic. It was fairly tight, but came out O.K..

Dovetails are not all equal but the proper direction is to drift a sight (front or rear) out to the right as viewed from behind the gun. Thus they should be drifted in from the right side towards the left.. The dovetails are usually tapered just a bit so that as the sight is installed it tightens and conversely as the sight is removed (to the right) it loosens as soon as the initial bond is broken. There are of course exceptions as some are pinned in place with 'roll' pins and some even have set screws.. Never punch out a front sight mounted on a ramp. They have to be pressed out with a purpose designed tool or the ramp will be damaged. Lastly never punch or hammer on a tritium or nite sight. The vial of luminus material will almost always shatter..use that purpose designed tool we've talked about. They are available from Brownells as well as other places..

Move sight from the right = tight.
Move sight from the left = loose.
Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.
