Range Question for my Handi 444???
« on: November 15, 2011, 04:09:08 PM »
I am going to site in my Handi 444 tomorrow, but I only have access to a 50 yd. range.  How should I site my gun in using Remington 240 gr bullets?  1 inch high at 50...2 inches..etc?  Thanks guys!

First of all how far above the bore is the scope or open sights? Then use this http://handloads.com/calc/

Measure to the center of the scope and use the ballistic calculator. Use the factory specs for the ammo minus 100 FPS unless Hornady then use factory specs. It will lead your righ.

Ok..so it is showing to sight it in dead on at 50 will drop 1.54 at 100 and 5.66 at 150 (which will probably be out of my range anyway) So does that mean I should sight it in 1.5 high at 50 to put me dead on at 100?

With a 1.5"-high-at-50 sighting, it would still be rising at 100 yards (about 2.5"), and would be zeroed at about 165 yards. However, assuming you are hunting moderate-sized game that would not be impractical and would give you almost 200 yards of range without bothering with holdover.

If you set it 1" high at 50 yards, that should give you a zero of about 140-150 yards depending on specifics like exact sight height and muzzle velocity. It will only rise to a bit over 1.5" by 100 yards. That would probably be the most practical zero for this caliber and your desired use.

The old 'rule of thumb' was to have a -0- that gave you 1" + or -, so for me that has usually turned out to be about 1" high at 50yd. and then where ever it ends up on out there, say 120ish, at 1" low; plenty far for me to get a whitetail and not have to rethink my hold. Our typical hunting/bagging range is not as far as yours might be, though.
