Finally got back here.....
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:36:48 AM »
Well i havent been on this forum in a while, between hunting and fishing and now school i was so busy and finally i got back here... Well i own a 22 hornet and i got a 25 06 last year for christmas, and it shot good with 120gr corelocks. I picked up a box of hornady sst 117 grains, the superformance, well how are they on deer because i am trying to take it out opening day for buck up here in pa, as i got a doe in the youth rifle season. And i remember how it took forever to get new barrels and stuff, well how is it now? has it gotten better? Thanks

For your question on how long it takes to get new barrels............I sent a reciever in for a nrew barrel this coming monday the 14th will be 2 weeks ago. Its done and in the process of shipping. Right now its in a ups terminal in harrisburg Pa due to arrive at my door tuesday the 15th I would say a 15 day turnaround is good.

thanks, i am still deciding wat barrel to get, i have a 22 hornet(handi) 2506(handi), 243, 30 06, inline 50, and a 12, 20, 410. Only 2 of the are handi rifles, so i was thinking a tracker 2 barrel wit scope, 280, or 30 30 or a 28ga? I am in a big decision or maybe a 12 or 20? Thanks Also any one use 117sst outta a 25 06 on deer

Welcome back!

You've pretty well covered your bases, but I notice you didn't mention the pistol calibers or the 45-70 which is a must for the dedicated Handi owner.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

357 would be a good starting point as ammo is inexpensive and you can shoot .38 specials for plinking a little cheaper.  Another good one if you want to reach out some would be 7mm-08.  ;)

Yeah my poppop has a 357 pistol and he has alot of ammo for it so i might get one, but i sorta want a tracker2 barrel and put a scope on it, and how is a smoothbore 20 for rifled slugs like to 50 yards?

Works great and with Remington sluggers they are fairly inexpensive to shoot and they shoot good out of my Handi smoothbore 20.

I've taken a couple deer with mine and the furthest was 60 yards and they didn't travel over 40 yards after being hit.

.357 is a fun rifle and when you finally get into reloading I'd recommend you rent a reamer and convert it to Maximum and you will have a rifle that shoot .38 spl, .357  Mag. and .357 Maximum which gets you a little more range than with the .357 Mag.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

As mention 357 is a great choice to start reloading for it was my first. Tracker II is another great choice. Mine is a tack driver with light fields. And I have a 22" 20ga modified choke barrel that will shoot Remington 2 3/4" sluggers inside of a paper plate at 75 yards that is deffinately minute of deer. the trick with the rifled slug guns is to find what it likes to shoot. Buy as many different sabots including Buck Hammers and shoot for group size before you even start sighting it in.
