Remington 798 in 243 caliber problems and questions

My Remington 798, 243 caliber is giving me some problems. I returned it for service when bolt refused to open without unusual amount of force. Returned to me with notation they "turned the barrel". Problem somewhat resolved but now it groups like a drunk sailor in a spitting contest.  I get small 1.5 groups then the next group may expand to 3-4 inches even with a cold barrel. I suppose it could still be the barrel..., any ideas of what I can do to check before returning the rifle for repair?
 
Also, would this 798 in 243 be considered a short or intermediate action length?
 
It is an attractive firearm and aside from my bad luck with the bolt and accuracy I would not even hesitate to buy another 798  if the price were right.

Chech the action screws and scope mount screws. Use a known good scope. Look for the contact points between the barrel and forearm.

I'd say it is the short action. The 243 round fits snuggly in box with little room to spare.

Send it back and tell you you want it fixed properly or replaced with a non faulty one.

  Be sure that you are not overtightening the front action screw.  If you are screwing it down really hard, you will get inconsistent groups.
 
  Inconsistent groups (tight group, then loose group, then tight group), generally have nothing to do with the barrel and action itself.  It is almost always the bedding of the stock to the action, or the contact between the stock and the barrel, or the mounts, rings or scope.
 
  If you send this back to Remington, I sincerely doubt that they will be able to fix your problem.  They will just declare it to be within specs.

Mannyrock - I was of same general opinion on accuracy issues so I ordered a new stock to see if that will resolve problems.
 
BtW you were right, - when rifle returned Remington Service did say "within Spec".
