New Moly Coated Fusion 95gr works GREAT!
« on: November 25, 2011, 03:32:43 PM »
I have been using the Federal Fusion 95gr in 243 since they first hit the market. I have never lost a deer and have never had one run over 25yards after the shot using this round. They are an outstanding bullet and I will continue using them until they stop making them. They just plain work on whitetail. The reason for the post though is that when I purchased a new box this year, they were moly coated unlike years past. And that kind of concerned me since it is the only Fusion round that is moly coated right now. Not that moly coated is bad, but did they put a different style bullet in the 243 this year due to some reason unknown to the public. Well today my concerns are over. It worked flawlessly as usual. Shot this mature doe at 120 yards quartering to and exiting out the rear rib on opposite side. She traveled downward only. Just the way I like it.

Glad to hear that SLR,  I have been using a Marlin 336 30/30 for some time now, but I have often considered taking out my H&R  with .243 barrel..  I may well run into a black bear also, and some claim my .243 is too light.  My load is 85 gr Speer"gameking", 37gr Varget..should be doing about 3200 fps. I also have some with 40gr IMR 4895 pushing the same 85gr to about 3300 fps.  What do you think ?

At 120 yards the Fusion is moving around 2700fps with 1500fp of energy. You are going to get more fp of energy out of the 95 gr but more speed out of the 85gr. As you can see the Fusion is only pushing 3000fps at the muzzle where the 85gr is reaching as far as 3300. Run the ballistics to see the fp's. You should be close. I say you will be fine with what you are currently loading. The gameking is a well liked bullet for its weight retention capabilities on whitetail.

I got these charts off the Federal Fusion website.

Thanks SLR;
   I think I read somewhere that the fusion load by Federal really is a Speer bullet.  Seems natural since ATK owns Federal, Speer, CCI and a host of other companies...along with operating the Lake City Ammunition Plant in Independence, MO.
    I must make a correction on my previous post "gameking" is a Sierra bullet.  The Speer I'm using is Speer #1213.

       Good reviews for deer at Midway..    http://www.midwayusa.com/product/614059/speer-bullets-243-caliber-and-6mm-243-diameter-85-grain-spitzer-boat-tail-box-of-100
