Need a little help.
« on: November 08, 2011, 05:21:02 PM »
I know that somebody has to have an answer to the conundrum I've placed myself in.   While pushing a cleaning patch into the barrel of my .45 ML I got the patch to the bottom of the barrel, didn't seem too tight.  I went to pull the rod out and whoops  :o  the tip of the rod came off and it is absolutely satisfied with its new home.  There's no powder charge to blow it out, I've tried compressed air, nada, and there just doesn't seem to be anyway I can grab it with anything.  There's no plug to remove on the end so that option is out.  Who's been in or seen this predicament?  Ideas please.  Would it be possibe to drill out the back end, clean out the obstruction and then tap it for a piplumbing/pipe plug?   Thanks ahead of time guys.   Peshtigo

Is it a flintlock or a percussion? I have heard of people dribbling a little 4F blackpowder into the vent of a flintlock or removing the nipple on a percussion gun and dribbling in 4F powder and firing the obstruction out. I dont have any first hand experience doing this. The only other thing I can think of is to get one of the CO2 discharger things and see if you can blow it out that way.

lakota has the right idea.  pull the nipple, dribble in a little powder "even 3f", bump the side and dribble some more.  when it won't take any more, replace the nipple, cap it and fire it into a dirt bank so you can retrieve your jag.

+1 small amount of powder dribbled into the vent or where the nipple screws in, fire into dirt.

Pretty common problem actually I've had three pull off like that.  Now I use one piece rods for cleaning.  Buy overly long universal "unbreakable" rod material, file your own cleaning jag into the end, nothing to lose down the barrel but the patch.

If you use a CO2 rig, make double sure it's pointed in a safe direction. Makes that one shot a heck of an air rifle!!

if its a flint lock and has a vent plug . take it out and see if you can see any patch matrial . if you can you might not be able to get any powder under it. if its a Lyman you ll have no problem. but i wouldn't drill out the plug and replace it with a bolt could get you in trouble safety wise.

Any time that I've had to remove a Dry-Ball or a ramrod tip or anytnhing from my barrel, just follow the recomendations that lakota & BUGEYE have already made in this thread. I would only add that a few grains of 4fg is what I've used in the past under these types of situations.

If there were a lot of oil and cleaning solvents in the bore at the time of detachment, then it will be a more involved process. You may even have to remove the breachplug...

Don't forget to aim the firearm in a safe direction when you are removing the obstructions.

Thanks guys for the suggestion.  I forgot to mention that it is a percussion rifle.  I guess I'll have to try to get to the range this weekend and try blowing it out with some powder.  Kind of comforting to hear it's happened to others and I will be picking up a new synthetic rod.  ;)    Thanks again, Peshtigo

No need for a range trip to blow out a stuck jag.  One little "pop" in the back yard won't cause a stir.

Had a  dry ball once stuck so bad that the ball puller pulled out lead filled threads.
Went to the air compressor and gave it a blast of 120 psi and the ball exited with some force. :o I've never pulled anything that is really stuck with a ball puller.
I Have a good blow snozzle with rubber on the tip that helps seal it when I press it against the nipple, extreme cases I remove nipple and appy snozzle tip directly to the nipple hole. The story some one posted of the smith a pumping a stuck one out with grease sounds like the safest way(if messy).
For me iffin 130 psi won't blow it out something is MAJOR stuck.

There's those that have dry-balled and those that will...not a lot of in-between.

Use the big C02 discharger the one used in life vest inflating. Cabala's sell these.  Pour some water down the bore small amount.  Have the discharger set in the nipple. Then blast the whole thing out in the water jet. ;)
