Cross Threaded Action Screws on M70 Win
« on: November 17, 2011, 05:04:00 AM »
I have 2 Win M70s that I plan to restock.  On one of them the front action screw hole threads got messed up.  The screw will no longer thread in.  I tried the screw from the other M70 and it won't go in either.  I tried the 1st action screw in the 2nd M70 and it won't go in there, the screw is slightly messed up.  I'm ordering a few sets of action screws.  Will I need to have a smith use a thread chaser or go up to the next size screw?

Don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but the M70 action screw thread size is 1/4"-32, and you may find a tap locally in a hardware store - www.brownells.com has them for less than $3.

You may be able to clean up the threads with the tap, but without seeing the damage, can't say for sure.

I'll order the extra action screws and tap & T handle at the same time.  I don't think the damage is too bad & I can clean up the threads by hand myself, thanks.
