Advice on New Caliber

Hey guys, Im currently sending my gun back to get it fitted for a .308 barrel purchased here, and looking for some suggestions as for another additional barrel. I already have a Sako .300 Weatherby , a .243 for the Handi , and now a .308. I was thinking at getting a barrel for hog hunting and for just an all around fun gun. I have an aftermarket choate varmint stock on it.  I was thinking a 45-70, or maybe a .444 Marlin.


I have access to the following calibers as well.
7mm Mag
.270

30-30
Various Shotguns
Various .22's


Just looking for an extra barrel since Im already shipping it back, and now is the economical time to do it.


Give me yalls thoughts?

+1 on the .45-70 super versatile typically very accurate.  Good ammo available if you don't reload and can kill anything in N. America.  ;)  I love my Buffalo Classic personally, albeit the long barrel can get heavy.  ;)  I heard they still have some 7.62x39 barrels possibly.  Might ask Brian56 if so that's a more rare chambering.  Finally might consider the good ole .45 LC  I have that Classic Carbine also and love that gun.  Very carryable and good shooter.  ;)

I'ld go with a 30-30 or 223. Both can be barnburner accurate, are cheap to shoot, and can handle quite a variety of hunting tasks.
45-70's are fun, but there's much better platforms for the cartridge than the handirifle.

If you want an all round fun gun for plinking or hogs I'd have to recommend the 45 LC.
 
The 45-70 is also hard to beat, and I have both, and the one I always seem to grab either for fun or shooting hogs is my little Classic Carbine 45 LC.

BTW I reamed it to .454 Casull and it will definately do the job!

  I really like that checkering, and stock shape. Did you do that yourself?

No it was bought new, but H&R discontinued the 45LC Classic Carbine, but you can still get an accessory barrel, or you can find complete rifles on some sites and in some gun shops.
 
I bought mine new off the shelf last June from a local gun shop, so there are some still out there if you can find them.

+Another one on the 45-70, it's a required chambering for any Handiholic, many here have more than one including myself with six H&Rs in various models and configurations, ya can't just have one!! Bud's still has the 45LC BC Carbine in stock if ya want to check em out, a really fun little rifle.  :D CDNN had them on close out a few months ago for $247 shipped, many here including myself bought another one just because they were on sale and discontinued, my first one is a 460S&W, but I think this one will stay a Colt even tho the Casull reamer is available.

Thanks for the help guys-Sent the gun off today for the .308 fitting. And ended up going with the 45-70 for the extra barrel. I guess now it's time for some scope shopping!
