Preperation for deer season
« on: November 13, 2011, 03:37:29 PM »
I took a trip the the range today. My son and I spent the afternoon sighting our deer rifles and trying different loads. Although I am a Steeler fan, I figured the range would be empty and I was right. When I got home, I spent the rest of the afternoon sharpening knifes while watching the race.

Soooooo, When do you get ready for the soon to open deer season and how?

Nothing…

I have a small cabin on a piece of property other than where my residence is located…

At that property I have a shooting range and I shoot there year around—every rifle and handgun that I own…

My toughest task I have is deciding which handguns to take with me…

The Mrs. and I eat a breakfast there and then “hunt” a bit….

Generally around 1000 hours I am cold and that is the end of the first-day hunt…

Don’t even set an alarm clock…

I guess it can be interpreted that hunting really is not a priority to me anymore…

But, I guess I go just because that is what I have done my entire life…
(Hunted the same property/area for 47 years)

Probably a Blackhawk 45 Colt and a T/C Contender 7-30 Waters this year…

Good-luck to all…

BCB    that sounds nice.

Yes, and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to avoid the “hassles” that most hunters go through to prepare for the 1st day our deer season…

But, it did not arrive without considerable work.  The property was purchased by my grandfather in the 20’s(?) and about 30 years ago I purchased it.  The price was fair, but it was not free as several other people were interested also…

The property has a township road on it that was not travelable due to ruts a foot deep and springs that caused it to be this way from any traffic from previous years…

I quickly went through all of the legal work to get it annulled—done…

By the way, I worked jobs that were 5 ½ days per week, and mostly a full day on Saturday.  Sometimes even part of a day on Sunday…

Many from PA will guess that I worked in the coal industry and that black stuff has been in the ground 300-400 million years, but it had to be removed in a week!!!...

The township road is nearly 1700 feet long and I used a near-junk garden tractor with a make-shift drag and a good ol’ fashioned hand shovel to slowly remove the ruts and divert the springs to existing culverts that had long been lost or obstructed…

Slowly got sections planted with whatever grass seed I could scrounge or purchase cheaply at a local grain/feed mill…

I now mow the entire road and that is where my shooting range is located…

There is still an ever ending battle to keep the one bank from growing in over the road…

Again, just plain ‘ol manual labor.  I purchased a gas-powered Stihl hedge trimmer and I just start at one end and do a couple hundred-yard section.  Then go back a day or two later and do another section.  I can keep it cut back.  The bigger stuff needs the chain saw…

This is done after work hours, although retirement is in my near future—I think…

Through all of this maintenance, guess what, I still got a day to hunt every once in awhile—no Sunday hunting back then either…

This is not an anti-Sunday hunting soap box, but just the facts that I have lived with to get this "advantage" for the shooting sports and some limited hunting now...

Good-luck to all who hit the woods on Monday.  Appears that some type of rain gear may be required…

Be careful and safe…

P.S.  By the way, was there anyone playing violins in the background as they read this???!!!

You should be proud, sounds like you worked hard to get it, and continue working to maintain it.
Most nowadays won't do that. I hope to get a simalar peice of heaven someday.
