Things fall apart when I leave
« on: November 17, 2011, 07:52:08 AM »
OK, I finally reached sunny Florida, last week.  Spent the first two days driving on snow and ice.  After Haines Junction, clear roads rest of the trip.  Beautiful weather all the way.  The Mazda Miata just humms on down the road.  Where the speed limit is 70 or 75, evreyone is doing 80 to 85.  Miata just purrs on down the road, keeping up with traffic.

Tried to have everything working fine before I left.  Checked the well heat tapes.  Taught Sky how to service the boiler, and to trouble shoot any problems.  Also showed him how the zone valves worked, and how to open them in an emergency.  Had new locking hubs put on the wife's Kia Sportage, and fresh oil changes, and checked all vehicles over.

Just got a call from the wife, she is in a tizzy.  She rolled window down on her KIA last night, and it is stuck in the down position.  She can not drive it to work that way, the temps is 45 below in North Pole this morning.  She can not drive the car to the shop with the window down.  Told her to check the fuses, if none are blown for her to call a tow truck to take it to the shop.  Kia dealer said he was swamped and it would take a week or two before he could fix.

She commendered Sky's S-10 to go to work.  She slid through two intersections.  The ABS went out, and Sky does not use studded tires like she does.  Told her at 45 below ABS sometimes fails, especially if vehicle is left out over night.  S-10 had  been left out.  Suggested she go buy a new set of studded tires for the S-10, and slow down.  Her Kia does not have ABS so with studded tires she should have no problems.

Suggested Sky drive my Diesel F-350 to school, since his Mitsubishi has too much torque to drive comfortably on snow and ice.  He does not like driving my truck to that bastion of liberalism, I have a big picture of a wolf in the cross hairs on both doors.  He says he gets hard looks, and a few nasty comments from girls at the Universaty.

Oh well, I'm enjoying the sunshine.  It's in the 80s here in Tampa.  My Miata and Honda are running fine.  The beach is good, and enjoying my buddies grand kids.

PS:  My joints don't hurt in this heat.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I get the same kinds of phone calls. Panicked calls with people paralayzed by some minor problem. Such is the burden of men.

I thought you were on the east coast of FL? Do you do any fishing in the winter while in Tampa? Is the inshore action any good?

Good to hear your trip was relatively smooth.  :)
I figure you knew there would be a few problems back home anyway.....  ;)

I take a week  off every year and go hunting/camping with some friends and my brothers...

A few years back one daughter lost the keys to the car...Knowing I keep spare keys in the truck, I got a call...I asked where mom's spare keys were, they couldn't find them...

I told them to call a locksmith, I was going hunting...

They'll make do without you if they have to...

What I'd like to know, as cold as it is up there why in the heck did she need to roll the window down??? :)

Glad you had a safe trip down yonder. Sorry to hear the temps are not working for you. I know you prefer single digits and below. Enjoy your vacation ;)

All I know to tell you is to stay home.  ;D Understand about the joints. Cool front blew thru last night. My recently cut up shoulder woke me up about 3:30 and is still aching. Supposed to be back in the 70s tomorrow so things should feel better.

Wish I could go out to Yuma to spend the next 3 1/2 months.
