Just picked up a 44 mag.
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:22:50 PM »
Stopped by the gunshop today and came home with a mint 96/44. I love the short throw lever and it's smooth as silk. Should make a nice little deer gun next fall. :)  The stock length is a hair short for me but I think it'll be perfect with my hunting coat on. I've got a bunch of 240gr. ammo loaded up so I'm planning on some target shooting tomorrow.

I'm planning on picking up a box of 240gr. Keith style bullets for reloading. I think it'll feed fine because the bullets strip off the top of the magazine and straight into the chamber but we'll see. The action is the smoothest of any lever action I've seen. You can cycle the rounds through it with one finger. It's nice. I'll try to take some pics. of the rifle and targets tomorrow and post them.

I had one of these it prefured a rounded bullet type . I used cci blazer 240g in it to take several deer out to a 100 yards. THe Jacketed bullets where my favorite . always felt it was saving lead when chamberingfrom mag  using lead/cast in it

If it carries and shoots anything like my Deerfield (99/44) you will love it. It loves the Hornady 240gr XTP and plain hammers deer.

I've had great luck with the XTP's over H110 in my other 44 mags. I'm sure this one will eat a few of 'em too. ;D
The only change I've made to the gun so far is to mount a recoil pad. It added an inch to the length of pull and it fits me better now.
