First night hunt of the season ends quite well.
« on: October 24, 2011, 08:33:47 AM »
Went out with a buddy last night to make a few stands about an hour after dark.  With the moon down and 3 days short of a New Moon along with a front moving in, we thought it would be productive.

First stand I was the shooter and my bud was the caller/ light man.  A bust, not a twinkle in the darkness.  The second stand, we reversed roles and hit pay dirt.  As soon as I turned on the light and did an initial scan, I got two sets of eyes in the middle of the dark field.  I start the fawn bawl, and they just stood there looking.  We were thinking deer.  So, I start scanning and set off with some soft distress cries on the hand call.  What we thought were deer began running straight towards us with the tell tale bouncing eyes that coyotes do!!!  Sweet.

200yds, I tell my bud to get ready for the left one.  100yds, Iask if he is in position, 75yds, I turn up the light power- these dogs arent stopping.  At 40yds, I whistle and they both stop and just stare right at us.  LOl, should have brought the shotty. ::)

My buddy lets the 22-250 rip on the one on the left- 100% bang/ flop.  The second dog is looking at his partner laying there and not leaving.  My buddy has a bolt malfunction on his rifle and is fiddling around with it.  The dog starts to get cagey and begins trotting off, I give some Ki Yis and it does what 99% of song dogs will do- turn broadside and look.  My buddy get his s**t together and drills the second one at 65yds- bang/ flop.  Hec ya!!!!!!

I start calling again to maybe get a thrid, but my bud gets up and starts the hooping and hollaring of victory.  It's his first night- time kill and a freakin double at that!!  Guess that stand is over, LOL  Male and a female, last years pups.  Good job bro!!  Im Jealous!!! ;)

It's all a hot mess...........

Great night. You did your bud right. What damage did the 250 do at that range? Fur looks good in pic. Congrats!

Fur was in excellent condition.  We skinned them out yesterday afternoon.  Both were lung, heart, lung shots.  I dont use the explosive expanding bullets with the preds up here.  The 22-250 was loaded with 55gr Sierra SBTs.  Im pushing them in his rifle at 3530FPS.  The did EXACTLY what I wanted them to do- pass through with a slow controlled expansion.
