Grizzly .357 Rem Max Ammunition
« on: November 19, 2011, 03:38:51 AM »
I have a Handi in .357 that I had a fella ream out for the .357 Rem Max. I live and hunt here in Indiana. Does anyone know anything about the Grizzly .357 Rem Max that is now available? I haven't had a chance to use the Handi this year and so I have to use my muzzie for now. Too late in the season to dial in the Handi. I don't hand load so any input would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any experience with Grizzly Max ammo.  The only commercial ammo I've used was Reed's, and it was good.  The real reason for the reply is to advise you to start reloading NOW.  You just got the best reason to begin. The maxi is easy to reload for a beginner.  You can custom design your load and do .38s and Mags also.  A very few boxes of commercial Maxi ammo will pay for your starting setup.  Don't be as dumb as I was and wait til you're 69 to start ::) ::)

Ok Midwayusa lists Grizzly .357 maxi ammo 200 grain at $29.99 for a box of 20. That's $1.50 every time you pull the trigger. A random load from my Speer manual using 200 grain bullets shows 15 grains of 2400, and CCI 400 primers for a velocity of aprox. 1,500 fps from a 10" barrel.

A box of 100 jacketed bullets is about $23
primers are about $34 / 1000
powder (2400) is listed as $17.50 / pound
brass (new) $27.50 / 100

That works out to 57 cents per round.  If you use free brass (reclaimed from your shooting sessions) the price drops to 30 cents per round.  That leaves a dollar to a dollar and twenty seven cents every time you pull the trigger, to buy a press and loading dies.  That first 100 rounds will cover a Lee press and a set of Lee Dies.  If you shoot 20 or fewer rounds per year factory ammo will work fine for you.  If you are like most guys I hang around with, however, 100 rounds per year is a normal year, and a couple years shooting will easily cover the price of getting set up to reload.

J D;

I'm in Indiana and shooting a .357 Maximum Handi Rifle this year, too. Its been a crazy year and I've scrambled to put this thing together. I'm hand loading the following:

180 Grain Flat Nose Gas Check Cast Lead Bullet by Beartooth Bullet
CCI Bench Rest Small Rifle Primer
20 Grains H110 (I'll Probably Do 19.6 or 19.8 Grains H110 In The Future)

Its a deer hammer !  I shot 2 deer with it last Tuesday. Neither went more than 25 yards from where they were shot. If you need help or want to use a few rounds, let me know.

Where are you located in Indiana ?  I'm in Greencastle, Indiana.

Good Luck !

Fred

The .357 Max was why I started reloading. Straight wall cases are super easy for a beginner. I now reload all sorts of calibers. I find it enjoying, I don't reload ammo by the thousand, I reload 50-100 rounds at a time.

I haven't been reloading long, less than 2 years. I have accumulated a lot of reloading stuff from trades and buying it. I still need some items; nice case trimmer, another powder dispenser, etc....

It is well worth it, wish I would have started when I was 18.

Big +1 to what everyone has said.  DONT wait to start reloading.  I'm 42 and wish I would have started 20 years ago instead of last year.  I'm having a great time working up loads that are the most accurate for MY gun.  Saving money and great accuracy, whats not to like about that?

I'm just waiting for Buffalo Bore to catch on to this cartridge. Now that would be a stomper given their current loadings!

Thanks, Dinny

Grizzly and Buffalo Bore ammo is fine for hunters with deep pockets that don't reload.  Their loads aren't rocket science and a reloader can easily duplicate them for a small fraction of their price.  Over three bucks a pop is a little rich for this guy.

You can buy the dies for the price of a box....

At those prices, they want them a lot more than I do.
