.44 mag works ...
« on: November 12, 2011, 05:10:09 AM »

i'm running an H&R .44 mag for the MS "primitive" season.  this is the first deer I have shot with it.  i'm using a fairly typical .44 mag handload consisting of a 240 g XTP and H110 powder.  anyway, didn't weigh the deer, but I suspect she would go around 110 lbs.  shot at 50 yds, bullet did a very thorough job.  didn't hit any bone (lung/heart shot), bullet went all the way through.  deer ran maybe 40-50 yds, stopped and looked around, then keeled over.  i'm pretty convinced of the killing power of the round within its range limitations.  its nice hunting with a rifle that kicks so little, has a quiet report, and kills deer so thoroughly.  btw, scope is a leupold fixed 4x, which seems to be just right for the rifle.

Nice job, n8dawg6! Me thinks the results would have been the same had the critter been a stinky ol' 250 pound buck.

Congratulations from another fellow Mississippian.  I have a CVA Scout in .44 magnum, but have not shot it at game yet.  My load is also the XTP but over 2400 powder.

Congratulations !  I've taken 2 deer with my 44 Magnum using the Hornady 240 grain XTP factory loads.

I have some 280 grain wide, flat nose, gas checked cast lead bullets from Beartooth Bullets that I'm anxious to try in my 44 Magnum. I have shot 2 deer with their cast lead bullets from my 357 Maximum this year with excellent terminal performance.

Walmart has a 2-7x32 Centerpoint scope that is excellent for up close, dense woods hunting with enough magnification in reserve for longer, open shots. Its only $68 too.
