25/06 loads for black bear?
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:00:25 AM »
Any suggested bolt action loads for black bear?If I resume hunting in western NY,I may use my 26" barreled bolt action for deer.If I encounter a black bear, what might be a dual purpose[deer/bear] load?
Thanks.

:) The only thing I would think with the fat on a fall bear, one might try 115 or 100 grain Nosler Part...All of my bear have been shot with bigger calibers...and they have been killed with far smaller calibers also....

Either 52 grs H-4831 or 49 grs IMR 4350 with the 115 Nosler partition will shoot lights out in most 25-06s and pity anything that is shot with it in the vitals.

I personally use the 120 grain Nosler partitions with 51 grains of H4831.  Good shooter and will do the job on both.

My sons shoot deer, lope elk and black bears with there 257AI, I first start loading it with 115npt for deer, there where so impressed with the DRT that when I wanted to try 100gr npt they said no, when they went elk hunting I wanted to go to the 120npt and they said no, 1 shot kills on them and did not go more then 20 yards, when they took them black bear hunting in the fall, and with all that fat it can plug a wound and not leave much of a blood trail I again wanted to go to the 120's, and again they said "dad, dont mess with success" the bears went less then 50yds. We only put 1 into them to see how far they would go since I could keep them in sight of my 45-70. I just bought a 257Wm, and will use  the 115npt and try the Hornady 117 Interlocks and see how they group. I am sure the 100gr npt for deer and lope would be fine.

too many calibers, not enough hunting seasons
