case knives

i was at a store and saw the case knife case...and the made in america caught my eye.  i am thinking it might be time for a new pocket knife and am thinking case.   anyway, i have never owned or used one.   who has?   experiences?  thoughts?  favorite model?     how do they hold up, sharpen up?

I've always had a special place in my heart & pocket for case pocket knives because it's what my grandpa used and loved.  They are great knives, they hold an edge very well, and will resharpen like a razor anytime you want.  Money spent on a case knife is never wasted.

My GREAT Grandfather used to give me a Case pocket knife every time he saw me. Why every time you wonder? Cause he knew a kid like me would lose them. And I did. I have been carrying Case knives for almost 60 years, and even carry a small three blade Case with yellow scales (my preference in scales) along with my Benchmade lock blade. I don't care for the stainless, and prefer the carbon steel blades, and as someone already said, the will take a skeery sharp edge.

I have an uncle who carrys nothing but Case knives.  Like Dee, he has no use for the stainless blades, but loves the carbon ones.  His current carry model for the last 10 or 12 years has about a 3 1/2" blade made of very thin carbon steel.  He also carrys a small whet stone and keeps that thing skeery sharp.  I once watched him split the pelvic bone of a nice 8 point buck with just moderate hand pressure.  I would not have thought a blade that thin would hold up to something like that if I hadn't actually seen it.  I've also seen him pick up an acorn, "ring" the center of the shell with no apparent effort and pop off the top half to check the nut inside.

I carried a Case Sodbuster for over 25 years until the back spring broke.  They are great knives.

thanks for the feedback, guys.   i am going to go up there sunday and pick me one out; might get one for each of my boys, too.   i saw one in particular that i liked and was so close to buying it that it wasnt funny.   after the input here, i will pull the trigger.  pictures to come.

Try a 2 blade Trapper with carbon blades.  The blades stain a bit, but they get scary sharp with ease.  I have a jigged bone handle one and its great.  You have to remember that these are not lock backs.  So some common sense when you are using them are required.

My old Case sgl. blade damascus (sorry, I dont remember the model, but I think it has a XX on it), holds an edge pretty well and makes a nice slice. Its probably too bad Ive used it and peeled/cut apples, etc. and have stained the damascus, but hey, they are knives, right!
Now I probably need to try to find the box..........

I carry the large Stockman during deer season...It's so sharp you have to be careful not to cut the hide when skinning...

I have an old Sodbuster on my loading bench that I've had over 30 years I'm sure how much longer I really don't know. I don't recall when or how I came by it. Yeah that long ago.

Here is my favorite carry case knife and I have a pair of them exactly alike cuz I lost one then found it again after buying a replacement. I believe I had one like it as a boy.



Either the above Case or this Buck is in my pocket every time I put on my pants.

That's the only Case I carry.  I like their CV (Chrome Vanadium known also as 52100-b) blades.  That ball bearing steel really takes and holds a reasonably long lasting  edge.  I think their "sugical stainless steel" is some of the worst on the market.  I gave away the couple given to me as gifts.  For some reason, I was at our local hardware and had the urge to try them again, so I picked up a large Sodbuster.  Misplaced the durn thing somewhere and haven't even tried to find it.


My other pocket knife is also a fairly small Buck called the Quicklock.  Small, back lock that clips to my front pocket.  Buck's 420HC stainless, while not up there with the better(more expensive) stainless, still holds a decent edge for a while also.

My bil had a case XX hunting knife that I drooled over for years, he LOST it. The only Case I have now is a lockback in a tin, with knife, case, oil, and stone. Too pretty to use I reckon. Thought about selling it but it's not costing me anything sitting in my closet. Another I like was the mako lockback, wish I still had it. POWDERMAN.

I have about 30+ case knives . Cheeta's and hunters mostly. I carry a stockman alot over the years. I like Case knives . That said while at Smoky Mt. Knife works in the spring I looked at several wanting to add to my collection. Some of them were not as well built as others. I would suggest checking any Case knife you want to see if it is one of the better built models or not. I saw some with alot of side play in the blades when open.

Ted Trueblood recommended the Trapper model over50 years ago as an  all round outdoorsmans knife..I have carried that model ever since...my first two were Case...Lately I have been packing Tree Brand only because in my area the Case was not available..may pickup one when I travel this fall..With  a saw this is all I used to dress birds, antelope, deer and elk this fall..have sheath knives in my pack, but the pocket knife is there in my pocket handy, easy to clean, and resharpen...Plus the rounded skinning blade is excellent for opening up the animal...no sharp point to nick the punch....great knife, great style, recommended by one of our greatest outdoorsmen.....

I'm liking the looks of the Case Trapperlock without the belt clip but could go either way.  I like the blade shape and the yellow scales.....what do y'all think??

Yup I like the looks of the trapper lockk but don't think I'd want the belt clip thingie on it.

I've carried and used a lot of different brand pocket knives. Some were junk and some were very good. The only one I would rate as excellent is a Case. Buck is a close second.

I used to like Gerber better than Buck but not after buying one of their Chinese made ones without bothering to notice where it was made. I see Gerber and Buck store displays everywhere but hardly ever Case anymore.
