Expendable hunting/fishing camera
« on: November 23, 2011, 03:19:14 PM »
I think I need an inexpensive camera to take hunting & fishing that will stand up to being carried in my pocket/pack and not have problems with a little rain.  I don't want to expose my digital Canon to this abuse so any ideas as to what I should look at?

I have always had really good luck with the Sony Cybershot digital cameras. I still have the first one I bought for my girlfriend in 2003. When we married and were honeymooning, I dropped it on the rocky bank of Lake Michigan and it took a hard hit to the side. That scar is still there but the camera hasn't skipped a beat. I just hope for your sake and my reputation that they still make them like they used to. :-\  We have since upgrade to a Canon EOS Rebel.

Thanks, Dinny

Go to the local pawn shop, second hand store, or camera store and pick up a nice used major brand digital.  Last year I picked up a Canon Powershot S70 from '03 or so.  It came with 3 batteries and since it did not come with a charger and I already had one I got it for $30.  It's a fantastic camera!  A little large by today's standards but it has an optical viewfinder as well as the display.  I have seen Nikon's, Canons, Sony's for less than $50.

Having been a TV news photographer I still tend to over do it when I buy a camera.  Now I think something that folds flat might be the way to go when out in the woods and water.  Someone told me about a nearly indestructible Olympus for less than $200.  I think it was supposed to be waterproof down to 10'.

I've been retired for a while and not really up to date on digital.  I don't even want to think about how little I got when I sold a big load of Nikon film cameras and accessories. :'(
