Odd morning
« on: November 20, 2011, 11:03:12 AM »
Well today I was going to be lazy and give the deer a break.  Then at 6 the neighbor text me. So I get moving get dressed and out the door. We decided to hit the woods close to the house, can just walk there. He dont hunt much so I set a stand up last week for him in his favorite spot. Well I start to get comfy setting on an intersections near a field where several trails come together. Like I said, I STARTED to get comfy. I hear BOOM second later another BOOM. So I wait. He does NOT miss, natural shooter. He text me, may have to track one? So I head to the opposite end of the woods and head to him. We meet up, seeing nothing. He lost blood just prior. so we search the area. Temp give up and go back to his other deer.
Start to cut and notice his (button buck)belly is greenish? UH OH :(
Cut the skin back, crap gane green!!! cut several spots the same all over. Found a cut on his rear leg about 1 1/2" long. Think someone got a bad bow shot not sure. Waiste of a young one. Now neighbor is mad to say the least.
We go back and get on the blood trail. Where the neighbor lost the trail, the deer doubled back ;D . But we found the contunued blood sprinkles. We followed this critter 1/2 mile to an entrance road to the woods. It walked out to the road, down the middle of the road 200 yards on to a neghbor patch of woods. There she lay staring at us. We backed away(left guns on other property, had no permission to be where deer went) Went to the neighbors, not home. She was only 15 yards off the road. So we go to put her down. SHE LEFT, while we were gone. We followed sprinkles a couple yards, decided to wait till neighbor got home and get permission. Couple hours later was able to talk to neighbor. He said no problem, so off I go. Hunting neighbor was in town and I couldn't wait. Search was on.Searched the briar patch she was headed to nothing. Turned back and started searching other area where she could have went. For what ever reason I glanced out across a cattle pastor. What is the white log I can partially see, over the crest of the hill? TADAAA. Crap I am 300 yards from the road! with a DEEP ditch with creek between me and the road. I could bother the farmer neighbor again, Nahh. Pulled out the rope I brought with me ;) . Looped her head, made a big loop to throw over me and mush mush.... I get her in the woods away from the cattle grazing area. Look for the wounds. uh oh piece of inards sticking out crap(got a theme going hear) Go ahead and cut her open, yeah yeah gut shot. Hold breath get out what I can. Drag her across the creek and UP UP the hill. Got her to the road. Peel coat off, sweated 5 plus pounds :o . Hunting neighbor calls made it home, on his way up. We flop her in the truck and head home. 8)
Some times a day in the woods is as exciting as.... well I don't know. But it turned out half ok ;)

Get home wife hands me knifes and says "you still have deer hanging" so off the shed I go :D

Hey you Indiana fellers, have you tried Deer Brats yet. Oh yeah baby. Getting this deer chopped up and it will make a trip to Celestine to become Brats mmmm. :)

I have had to much fun this last week(on vacation) I am changing plans and going back to work tomarrow.

You're going to the right place by going to Celestine.  Spiced summer sausage is good but I can eat my weight in the bologny he makes.  Believe me!  That's a chunk of bologny.  ;D

I love their bologny. Not had their sausage. If you like Bratworst, they are excellent out of Deer.

  Thanks.

Sometimes it pays to be stubburn. We are going to recheck his scope and resight it. I think it got bumped or something. Last year it was on the money. But on both deer, he shot a low to the right. He did fire thru those little sapleens guess that could have affected it. Just not sure yet.

Celestine huh. Must be going to Betz's. They make some good deer that's for sure.
Used them for years, also used Sanders and Ferdinand Processing. I finally bought a grinder this year and will start doing my own, if I ever see a deer. I haven't seen anything except a couple of spikes so far.

I think the place we last used was Sanders. Some neighbors brought in their flyer. I am a Bratsoholic and they were on the menu.

We do have a grinder and dehydrator. Just have not ventured into salami and Brats yet. Plus mama gets tired of hearing of deer by the end of season. ;)

Betz or Sander either one will do ya right.  I've used both and been happy with both.  Betz did the last I had done.

You do know these folks do most of their work with razor sharp knives don't ya?   ;D   Shoot they're  liable to charge ya double. :o   Seriously though.  It's been I think 3 years since I was down there.  As a matter of fact, just this weekend the wife and I were talking about going to the shoot they have down there.  Been a while since the last time but we always did well there.  First is a half of beef and so on down the line.  If you've never been I might have to introduce ya to the sport sometime if you were interested.

Deer brats?  Great idea!!  I love brats, but for some reason have never thought of making them from venison.  I live right down the road from Celestine, will have to get some brats made this year.  I usually just bone out my own meat and cook it like roasts, chops, stews, pulled BBQ, and taco meat.  I take some of the deboned meat into Sanders and have them turn it into deer bologna for christmas gifts.  As far as I can tell, I'm getting the same meat back that I took in.

If you're turning the meat into hamburger, sausage, or bologna, you will get more meat back than you originally took in.  Venison is too lean, and they add fat to it (pork fat I think) to make proper sausage out of it.
