I did this while I was younger. Shoot them only from very open choke. I caution against doing this too much. Way too much risk.

I watched them on Guns and Ammo TV show drop a 20ga shell down the throat of a Benelli M4 and fire the 12ga shell behind it, twice.  The M4 ate it like candy.  For what it's worth. Of course the M4 has a thicker walled barrel than some shotguns.

The question was ask if cut shells work in a rifled slug barrel and the short answer is no. The rifling causes the hull to slow down in the barrel and the crimp opens. Shoots a pattern instead of like a slug.
