Caliber change
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:19:24 AM »
Just a thought: I was looking at a BAR Lightweight Stalker in .338 WM.  Is it possible to change it to a .338 RUM or even a .375 RUM?  What would be involved in doing this?

It's one thing to change the barrel on a common bolt rifle, & go with a round that shares the same head size/cartridge length. Trying to do something similar with a BAR would be cost prohibitive for most. They make the BAR in a wide range of chamberings, isn't there one that would suit you? I have a few quick follow up type rifles, though I hardly ever need a quick follow up shot. Unless bird & maybe predator hunting I feel those 2nd & 3rd follow up shots are overrated.

If this is going to be an issue with head space then how about using a .338 bullet with a full size .375 H&H case?
The .338 WM has a case length of 2.5".  The .375 H&H has a case length of 2.85".
This is a difference of .35".  With this added length would it still be possible to do the conversion?

You would still come out ahead by selling your current BAR & buying another in the chambering you desire. There is a company called Midwestgunworks.com that specializes in Brownings, they should have an official answer for you about conversion possibilities. Another possibility is tailored handloads, if you reload. But with a semi, you have to have the right pressure to work the action properly.

I do't think the 375H&H will fit in the BAR action. Shoot, it won't fir in a standard length bolt action very well.  :o There is a reason the BAR is not offered in that chambering.  ;)
