i will be in another 2 years.  my buddy took a 412 pound boar this last season; and it was the smaller of the bears that came in that night.

generally 4 to 8 years right now. see wisc DNR website, they have a pretty good breakdown on number of applicants and success rate aas well as number of years preference for each zone. good luck.

Wow!!!!4 to 8 years----I'd better get moving! I just moved to Kenosha from Charleston,SC and thought since the deer gun season was so short that it would be too dangerous (in SC we had a good 3 mo. to hunt so we didn't all have to concentrate in the woods during one week and could stay home and eat our TG turkey in peace!!!) So I thought , how about bears--never hunted them before and a shiney black rug would be nice even if the meat was only fit for dogs(plenty of food around here with an Italian mother-in-law.) Man!!! I'd better get in the drawing pool before my social security kicks in in 5 years!!! Any suggestions on how to proceed would be welcome.    PG

deadline to apply for 2004 is Jan. 16, 2004. next decide where you want to hunt. then if you want to bait or hound hunt. Next, either locate a guide/outfitter to hunt with, or, learn how to bait bears and do it yourself, I'd suggest Dr. Ken Nordberg's book on bear hunting and baiting. can be found at www.bear-hunting.com for $14.95 worht every penny. good luck.

sorry it has been so long.   todd (aka "the big anus") got him over bait.  originally planned to use the 454, but as his dad was given a death sentence by the doc and had never been bear hunting, t.b.a. decided to go all out with the 300 ultra mag.  shot was perfect and the bear still made it a good 50 yards.  like i said, he had a bigger bear in earlier but it winded him and he couldnt get a shot.   it was so big he thought the one he had shot was 150#.   there was no "ground shrinkage" on this bear.  the more they carried it, the more they realized it was no small bear.
like was said, there is about a 5 year wait in wisconsin.  so start applying now.
you guys can send me all the bear meat you want, it is one of the finest meats availible to the sportsman.   proper care must be taken, though.  dont make the mistake of passing it up.

:D My buddy has been going about every 3 years in zone A-1. Zone B takes about twice as long. My buddy would rather eat bear than elk or deer. I think it's good.
Sometimes the Whitetail show in Madison has some bear outfitters there. I think that is March or early April.
