E E Scope
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:26:20 PM »
Has any one ever used a extended eye relief rifle scope on a TC.  What I have is a 4x Weaver Classic that was supposed to go on a model 92 lever action that came new with the mounting holes.  From what I gather  there is a 4-6 inch difference in eye relief between the two types of scopes.  The new barrel I was going to use it on is a 35 REM.

Scout type rifle scopes are IER or intermediate eye relief (the EER/LER - extended/long eye relief are handgun scopes).

The IER rifle scopes are usually a little more forgiving on your eye alignment behind the ocular lens, but in a similar magnification comparison the IER will have a much, much shorter eye relief than the EER/LER scopes.

A quick comparison of optimum eye relief using your scope...
Weaver 4X IER Scout Rifle Scope 9" ER
Leupold 4X EER Handgun Scope 18" ER

I wouldn't want the Weaver on a handgun and have to deal with the funky hold/technique to shoot it.

FWIW

Waaaaay back in the olden days those type scopes were the only option you had for a pistol scope. There were a many a black eye and cut face to go with them in calibers like the 35 Rem. I would get a REAL pistol scope myself. Weaver makes a very good pistol scope. I have three 2.5X8X28 on three Contender barrels and I have not had a single problem out of any of them. They are still on zero after a number of years of hunting and target shooting from day one of zero. They run around $200.

Bad time of the year to bring home another gift for myself.  My 30-30 from the bench with a bi-pod barely moves even with heavy loads.  My 445 super mag with a 300gr pill is another issue.   I used the max eye relief from the Weaver and the min from the Simmons on my 30-30. I have yet to fire my 35Rem.

I know two guys who told me of their bloody eyebrows and both used true rifle scopes  on 30-30 Tc.  This was waaay back in the day also.   Last time we talked neither were interested in getting back into this type of shooting.  The only blood shed from me was my little 94 in 444 loaded with 335 gr Beartooth special.   Dang  rifle went a little under the armpit,  got the bridge of the nose and bent my glasses.

I have enjoyed using shorter eye relief scopes on some of my TC's in some calibers.  On the 35Remmy I want full arm extension 8) .

Since we are relating experience... I've been shooting scoped handguns since the late 60's, and there has been a truck load of them chambered for some of the heaviest recoiling cartridges there is in a handgun.   I won't use rifle scopes on my handguns, not even on a rimfire... they don't fit my shooting technique.   By always using EER/LER scopes and good technique I've never been hit by a handgun scope, not once.   Probably the brute of them all was the 416 Rigby 10" Encore, and it never got me either.   Technique does play an important roll with the brute cartridges even with handgun scopes though.     To me the 35 Rem is a wimp in comparison to many that I've had, but I still wouldn't put a rifle scope on one.   ;)

You guys have just about talked me out of this idea.  I don't think it would ding me but it may be to much of a change in technique.  Working with a new round and hand loads I think this could make finding the right combo harder.

Don't know if Ive been good enough for Santa to put much under the tree this year.   If he were to drop off a 416 Rigby in a 10 inch pistol  I think I would have to send it back.  My hats off to you Ladobe to handle something like that.  I'm pretty sure my  limit was a 444 I got to shoot a couple of times in a TC.
