Oh, yes, it is a .45-70 with a home cast bullet. I had worried it would require a lot of experimentation with bullets sizing, lead alloys, lubes and powders but it worked out pretty well. Very basic, simple and straight forward stuff. The velocity is about 1,200 fps so it was a bit of a challenge to get it on paper from 100 to 200 yards, but with some ballistic calculators I got it to this point.
Luckily the wind was blowing nearly straight in. The wind may have drifted me, but I will have to shoot some more to confirm. The group measures about 2-1/4". Honestly, I was nearly stunned.
By the way, that is a 500 grain bullet, and at those velocities it is quite tame. I'll have to cast up some more bullets for the next trip to the range.
