Looking for opinions on .50BMGs
« on: July 11, 2010, 04:34:20 AM »
I've been wanting a .50BMG for some time now, and after having the opportunity to shoot one a couple of months ago, I'm losing sleep at night I want one so bad.  At first thought I was set on the Barrett M99, as that is what I shot, plus I was very familiar with the name.  But after doing some research (online) I see that there are a lot of different ones out there that look to be worth considering.  I'm looking for a bolt-action, single shot..not mag fed or one that is the shell-holder,breechloading type.  I've been looking at the Barrett M99, the Armalite AR-50, Bohica, Serbu, and last but not least, the Bluegrass Armory Vulcan 50.  I've read some really good things about the Vulcan.  I was curious if any of you guys have shot any of these if you would give me your opinions and pros/cons.  Thanks in advance for your help, and I'll post a link to a short vid of me with the M99, if anyone cares to watch it.

I just had a 50 built on a Mcbros shellholder action with a K&P match grade barrel and a Mcmillan stock. Have'nt got to shoot it much yet but i could'nt be happier with it so far.

Not sure about a few of them you listed, I've shot the 99 a lot and a 82A1 mag feed with iron sights, that was the best one. A few other over the years, but the 99 is the best for the money short of a custom. That Barrett 82A1 might still be for sale, it was nice. I can check if you want?

I have shot an AR 50. What a fun gun to shoot, kicks like a 410 shotgun. Turns groundhogs into red stains at 600 yards....and probably much further out also.

Iirc 50's have about 70 ft lb recoil but the recoiling velocity is so slow it feels like something else.have you thought about the 416 barrett?  Though if I was going to get a bmg it would be a viper bluegrass.  I seen the torture test video looked stronger than the. Barrett
In theory its sound ",but in practice its flawed

Here's one that I don't think has hit the market yet, by SIG.  Looks like a jewel, bet it'll be a good one.  Though a bit out of my price range, at a MSRP of 9K  :'(

I've shot a Barret...that was litterally and figuratively a BLAST.

If I had an extra 10 grand laying around doing nothing and I had a 2 mile shooting range, I'd probably seriously consider the purchase.  8)
