If you ain't got a .45 Colt, well, you ain't got a .45 Colt.  Lots of folks favor the .44 Magnum, with good reason, but if you handload, the .45 outshines the .44 by a huge margin.  All you gotta do is look at the case and the bullet.  They're bigger.  Much much bigger.  The .45 will do more than the .44 with less pressure. 
 
That said, if you don't handload, the .44M is the way to go. 
 
Of course there are more powerful cartridges, like the .454.  I'm just saying that the .45 Colt has the potential of being so much more than any .44 you can shoot out of a handgun.  I'm an old person, been there and done that with all guns and cartridges, and I've settled on the .45.  The only .44 caliber gun I own now is the new Ruger in .44 Special,but I know it can't ever be a 44M or a 45 Colt.
