I'll go with Cheese on this one.  If you are looking for a collectr you will pay more for one in really nice condition.  If you want a hunter/shooter then you may wish to look for the Model 38, the shortened "calvary' version of the M96.  These were made by Husqvarna and are simply excellent rifles of typical Swedish quality.  My M38 came with a #3 (worst of the bunch, so to speak) barrel that still puts two into the same hole at 150m, with factory S&B ammo.  I couldn't beat this with a stick and because of this, the 6.5 Swede is the only caliber I do not reload - I simply cannot load anything more accurate than the factory ammo it shoots.  jmtcw.

M-96s run average $300 to $400 and M-38 run average $350 to $450. I have learned that the barrel condition stamped number really does not mean a great deal as to how well the rifle will shoot. Some of my best shooters have #3s.

those prices the guys are saying seem about right to me.i got mine about 15 yrs ago for 40$. it is now a very nice shortened hunting rifle.years ago you used to see tons of them but now not so much.i would expect them to be in the 500 to 600$ range within a few, maybe 10 years.too me they are about the finest of all the older mil surp rifles.

Jeeeeez, can remember back in the 70s, chatting with a farmer in Oklahoma that did gunsmithing on the side who liked working with
Swedish mausers to build rifles.  He complained about the Swedish rifles getting kinda expensive....LOL, $20 if I remember correctly.  Anyway, think I paid about $220 for a really primo Husqvarna 38 Swede and just a little more for a nice M96 Swede.  This was within last 2 years.

Swede m96's here go for around $450 and up depending on all matching numbered metal and wood.  I've seen here lately the bolt matching the serial number go for $450 and both of them sold here.

If the stock disc is correct and the stamps/crowns of the arsenal repairs are right most of them shoot great.   Now with that said like Mikey says i never seen a swede shoot bad yet.

My 1907 CG M96 benchrested will shoot 1 1/2'' groups using new sellier & bellot 131gr ammo at 100yds with iron sights.  I had some SWAT guys ask me what was i shooting that grouped tighter than some of there scoped SWAT rifles.  They were shocked to see it was a 100yo swede mauser.
