What is a fair fee for creating a website ?
« on: December 05, 2011, 01:14:54 AM »
  OK computer nerds...tell me this...
I am not very computer literate, so I must ask you guys..  What is a fair fee for creating a website for an organization ?
I know my son does these the hours he has available when not truck driving or running his ministry, but my expertise runs short when it comes to computers.
I do know he created a website for our local town, other municipalities and various charitable organizations, free of charge.

The we find Obama has given somebody $230,000 to do just that for a "green jobs" website, does that sound reasonable ?
There is another problem however..there are nNPO  "green jobs" listed !

How long does it take???

Figure how many hours and multiply by how much an hour he thinks he is worth...

I'm not real familiar with it, but it seems my son can do it in 2-3 hours.

Perhaps $100,000 per hour is what Obama's friends are getting now days...

As a part time web designer myself...that is cheap.  :D  Matt or myself won't touch site design for less than $250.

I haven't looked at the site in question, but I will say that $250k might not be unreasonable, depending on the website.  Our company has paid better than $100k to produce a website that provides a service for our customers.  It has a back-end database that is nearing a terabyte of data, requires 3 high-end servers to handle (and will likely grow beyond that in both number and size of the servers in the next 6 months).

All this, for a customer base of roughly 2500 companies and 10,000 individuals that use our products.  You might find that expensive, but the site is top-notch, is so much better than any of our competitors that it isn't even funny, and here's the kicker - it has generated enough revenue to pay for itself many times over.  Worth every penny.

So, for a website that might potentially provide services for literally hundreds of companies and hundreds of thousands of individuals, that price tag doesn't seem out of bounds.  I'd need far more specifics to know for sure, but depending on what the site does, $250k might be reasonable.  Then again, it might not - it wouldn't surprise me to find out there was a fair amount of waste there, but probably not nearly as much as you think.  We aren't talking about a mom & pop business website that can be hacked together on the cheap for a few hundred dollars here.

I am nearly computer illiterate and I suppose they are not as elaborate as many corporate ones, but my son has made them for his own Christian Ministry which gets replies, questions and does networking etc., from around the world. His wife is a town councilman and when he heard that somebody had been hired by our township many months ago to build a website..and has made no progress...he went ahead and created one for the town.  He has also made them for various charitable organizations and all have been satisfied.

BTW:... He did all these for free..Along with being a heavy truck driver and putting in many hours toward his own ministry each week.
Needless to say, he's a "workaholic"..but still a fine and decent Christian father & husband.  Not bragging, but we really do need more like him. ;)
