.17 HMR gun improvement project almost done!
« on: May 07, 2012, 03:30:01 AM »
Got this one almost done. Need to finish sand and seal the forend, but the pillar and barrel are bedded. I decided I had it far enouhg along to see how she shoots. Best group was three shots touching at 50 yards using Hornady 20gr hollow points. No stringing at all. The 17 gr Hornady FTX didn't tighten up like the 20 gr did. I have not tried the Winchester or CCI ammo yet, but am getting excited about this one. The trigger is a little heavy so I might try my first trigger job, but we'll so how ambitious I get.

Here is some progress pics.

Thank You.

The grip cap is gaboon ebony and the forend spacer cap is from the same block of ebony. I am going to refinish the plastic spacer with a flat black epoxy paint and then clear coat when it is all said and done. I am gearing up for a prarie dog hunt in South Dakota this summer and this should done in time to make the trip. I aslo bedded the buttstock to the receiver. BSA sweet 17 scope sits on top. I am pretty sure it can shoot better than me.

Well it sounds like you found the combination for a good time! I have a BSA Sweet 22 scope that I have yet to mount. How do you like yours? I know its not the same one just curious about function and adjustment.

Scope appears to work as advertised. The only thing is the turret is calibrated for 17 gr and it is the only one that came with the scope. The rifle appears to prefer the heavier 20 gr bullets so we'll see what happens once I get some more rounds through it.

I had to go to the gun room to make sure mine was still there. Only it's all walnut. Tho heavy it will be a pleasure to site behind on the PD bench. You should be able to see every impact. Nice job. Kurt

Glad to hear the scope works well. With the 22 you get three turrets so hopefully that won't be as hard to mess with. Thanks for your insight.

Totally custom stock?  As in from-a-block-of-wood?

Looks like it, nice work!

Looks like a GSI.

Nice work 8uck5nort, ya got more patience than I do, I had a GSI walnut roll over stock set long time ago, decided it was more work than I had the patience to do justice on, so I sold it to another member.

It was a GSI blemish. So although not from a solid block there was a lot of finish work on it. I have done a mauser stock from a block to stock. Black cherry. Took about a year to carve that one out. When I build up some ambition I will tackle carving one for a really special rifle. We'll see. Working on my 44 Mag and 22 lr stocks now.

Very nice indeed.  That's the buttstock/forend I'm looking at from GSI for my .223 at some point.  ;)
