336 prices?
« on: October 29, 2011, 05:25:00 AM »
So whats the deal with the crazy prices on 336's these days? Heck i've seen 336w marked in the high 300's. Some CS models i've seen at 500!!!

So when did they start making these guns out of gold? I wouldnt pay more than 250-275 for one. Not that they arent good guns, because i really like them, but they are what they are.

JWP58,

I see this post is over a month old, and I can only talk about my neck of the woods.  Marlins around here are very plentyful, you can go into any shop and find half a dozen used setting on the shelf.  If you look you can find some real good buys.  The end of November I found a nice 336/35, it needs a little TLC for 250.00 and last week found a 36G 30/30 for 150.00.  To be honest around here 250.00 is on the high side for a used Marlin.  If you get tired of looking and paying those high prices come on over to my neck of the woods her in SWV and I'll take you to some of these shops that have great prices.  Good Luck,

i got a 1977 336C last year from a private party for $200. Given some of the quality control issues at Marlington these days i highly recommend looking for a used,pre-safety 336....they are out there.....Mike

In this post lies your answer. Current quality concerns has folks scooping up all the used that come on the market, driving prices up.

Honestly when is the last time you heard someone compliment the quality of a new Marlin? I looked over a 39 the other day. The receiver to stock mating looked like it had been roughed in with a claw hammer. Mind you this was no birch wood bargain gun but a nice piece of walnut that had been butchered. It probably shot just fine, but for $300 less I could get a poly stocked .22 auto that would get the bullets down range too.

Just a follow up on some of the Marlin prices here in my neck of the woods.  Friday I went into my favorite shop, my buddy hands me a 336/35 (1976).  This gun has a couple of small issues, both forearm and butt stock have been drilled a little off center for studs for a sling, and in front of the forearm some blueing is lightend up, like someone spilled something on it.  The gun is nice and tight and seems to work fine,  200 OTD.  Guess what, yup came home with me.  The 35's are kind of scarce around here, so number 2 won't be a problem.  I hope this continues around here for a little while or untill my pocket book holds out.
